Anybody using this combo of caliber and powder. Wanting to load some 150gr. Nosler Hunting Ballistic Tips with the H380 powder. Wondering if anyone has tried the combo. With powder being difficult to find, you gotta use what you can get your ands on. I can get my hands on the H380 right now. Let me know what you guys think. BASSHAWK

I don't think it's unworkable at all. As you say, components are difficult to come by and there are powders that I would try before H380 but you won't be giving up too much velocity. If you can find an accurate load that takes good advantage of the powder's velocity potential, then it should be plenty satisfactory---IMO.

I load for a 270, 300WSM and 7mm-08. All 3 of those calibers use something different powder wise. I use H4831, H4350 and H4227SSC. I am low of the first 2, but have basically a full pound of the 4227SSC. I wanted to use the H4350 on the '06, but I don't really have enough of it to start working on loads. What would be on your short list to start with? Maybe the top 3 options for powder? BASSHAWK

Well, as usual I would consult QuickLOAD to see what the most likely suspects are. Sometimes a powder listed is impractical due to the case fill, but it's easy enough to ignore the ones that suggest a 125% fill ratio.

Please do not rely on this as though it is published, tried-and-true load data.

Code:
Cartridge : .30-06 Spring. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 150, Nosler BalTip 30150
Useable Case Capaci: 60.345 grain H2O = 3.918 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 26.0 inch = 660.4 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 59465 psi, or 410 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 115 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

I use Hodgdon H414 with 52.5grs of powder and a Nosler BT 180 gr bullet. This combo works good for accuracy. I use the H414 powder because from my research this powder was made for the .30-06 round originally. 52.5 grains of powder is at or near maximum pressure/charge for the .30-06. Pushes the bullet to around 2600fps according to my books.

Well I went to the store that told me they had all the components. Got there and they didn't have all of them. Ended up with H380 powder, once fired brass instead of new and Sierra GameKing Spitzer Boat Tails instead of Nosler BT's. I loaded up a bunch at 57.5gr and COL of 3.25". Hopefully they will perform at least as well as factory fodder. We Shall see. Thanks to all for the information and replies. BASSHAWK

BassHawk, That load may be very hot!!!!! I shot H-380 in my 30-06 but I am shooting a Nosler 125 bal. tip. This load shoots great in my rifle, accurate and mild recoil. I am loading 56 gr of the H-380 and estimated 3100 fps, I doubt it is that fast.

Thanks for the info DLALLDER. I will keep a close eye out for signs of high pressure. The max charge was 59gr for the powder and bullet combo, hopefully at 57.5gr it'll be tame. BASSHAWK
