Looks like my Omega is not going to sell, so I will probably be hunting with it some this year. Currently, have a 2x7x36 Leupold on it. What is the distance shooting a 265 grain sabot bullet with 125 grain Triple 7? 150-200 yards? More?

About 100 gr of 777 is all you really need. 125 gr and you are just blowing unburned powder out the bore.

That load will get you 200 yards but you really should actually shoot it and learn what the drop is at various distances.

I've heard pros and cons of powder burning, both for ML hunting and modern handloading. I shoot a ton, always trying to find the perfect load. I also have found that the more powder you use, within prescribed limits, register more FPS on my chrono, so don't know much about how that useless powder burning. Just looking I guess for confirmation on ML as I'm thinking of corning this one road that has up to a 250 yard shot and was thinking of using the Omega some.

I thinking the excess powder applies mostly to roundball, due to you can only push it so fast with any kind of accuracy. Sabots, I have found that 90 to 100 give me my best results, and around 68 to 75 grs for roundballs.

Tx-basser, 50 Caliber traditional muzzleloaders with slow twist barrels will handle 90-120 grains of black powder. My Pennsylvania Hunter .50 caliber with a 1-66 barrel twist is most accurate with 95 grains of FFG Goex. Using a 178 grain patched ball with that load I should be getting 1,900 plus fps muzzle velocity. Center to Center 3 shot groups off the bench are right at 1" at 50 yards. That's with open iron sights and 72 year old eyes. smile Just as conicals aren't very accurated in slow twist barrels, roundballs aren't very accurate in fast twist barrels. Everything depends on how much or how little spin is needed to stabilize the projectile. smile

Oops Speedtrap.. Sorry about getting off topic for a bit. Regardless if the bullet and load will kill at 200 yards I think you probably need to do some shooting at 200 yards. Not all loads are accurate at 200 yards and not all shooters are accurate at 200 yards. As others have said, the load will probably kill at 200 yards and you will need to see what kind of drop you have at 200 plus yards. Having a firearm that is capable of killing at 200 yards is one thing, being about to put the bullet in a vital area is another. Good luck with your hunting.

Ironwood your right, my shorter TC Hawken has a 1/48 and it does pretty good and accurate out to 75 to 110 yards, but after that it starts dropping off significantly. I used to have a Kentucky Long rifle and it would really send the round balls out there pretty flat.
