About 20 years ago I found tracks on my place at Bowie and called the Game Warden. He verified that there had recently been a couple of confirmed sightings. Heck, with a range of 75 miles they're nothing to worry about.

I've seen 2 in my life. One ran across a ranch road in Arizona when I was elk hunting. Another time, I was glassing a New Mexico mountain and saw one. I feel very fortunate just to have seen them. Very few people actually have seen one.

UMMM... I have very little fear of lightning too but then again if it's lightening all around me I don't stand around in holding a rifle or shotgun. Plus I do have enough sense to get in out of the rain...

I'm not scared but if you are just right with the Lord and you'll be good to go because when he attacks you he's gonna go for your throat and it'll be over quick you'll never know it. Me.....I carry a sharp knife and can out run Usain Bolt so I'm good.

In highschool a lady in our town was killed by a mountain lion. I chalked it up to a freak occurance and never thought about it while out in the woods.

Rick, did my donkey kick you in the head? You can't shoot lightning...duh! trout
What you need for lightning is a pair of rubber pants. I've got two pair...

No no no...the Christmas sweater is to keep the busses away from you! It will not, i repeat WILL NOT, keep you from being molested by the genetically engineered government attack cats, created to kill gun toting conservatives...

here we go agian!!!!

I'm new here so haven't seen past arguments, but just wanted to add my 2 cents anyway. Contrary to TPWD official stance that blacks do not exist in Texas, I've seen two here in Llano Co. several years ago.

One was a full sized adult, the other smaller. Both were in the same area, though a few months apart. The big one was 20 yards away running through tall grass as we were fishing our way back into a remote cove by boat. Then it jumped a barbed wire fence about 50 yards away. No doubt in my mind what we saw, though it took me a few seconds to convince myself my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.

Definitely not a house cat. Probably 5 or so feet long stretched out, plus a 3 foot tail. So black it looked blue/black like a Chow dog.

Ok, so now try to tell me what I saw were escaped circus animals or that I need glasses (already wear them). I've heard it all before. <g>

ok, I understand the logic of saying you have a better chance of being struck by lightening than ebing pounced on by a lion, but I have a few thoughts...

1. A guy standing out in the middle of a storm has a much greater chance of being struck than someone sitting on the sofa in the house.

2. If there is a lion in the woods and I'm the guy who happens to be walking in those woods, I gotta think my chances of being lion chow are better than beign struck by lightening at that particular time if there are no clouds in the sky.

Dang, now you guys have me scared. I'll be wearing a motorcycle helmet, a flak jacket, and maybe a suit of armor next time I walk to the stand.

Here ya go MElacky, now dont be SKEERED

To get a hiker's probability of death from a mountain lion, we need the number of hikers in California:

Number of hikers in U.S.: 50 million people over the age of 12
Number of hikers in U.S. hiking 10 or more days in 1992: 13.4 million people over the age of 12
Source: 1992 pilot of the National Survey On Recreation And The Environment, by the USDA Forest Service, reported in Wildlife and Recreationists, R.L. Knight and K.J. Gutzwiller, 1995, Island Press, p.9.

I assume that California has at least 10% of the hikers, since California has 10% of the population of the U.S. California probably has a higher ratio of hikers, so using this number will give an upper limit to the probability of death per hiker.

The number of deaths per year from a mountain lion in California is 2 deaths in 13 years.

Thus the probability of death per year per hiker in California, for all hikers, is (2/13) / (5 million) = 3.1e-8 = 1 / 32 million.

The ratio of these two numbers, 32 million / 7500, is 4300. Hence a person in California is 4300 times more likely to die from a car than from a mountain lion if that person is a hiker.

Now suppose that mountain lions never bother the infrequent hikers, and only the serious hikers who hike more than 10 days per year are at risk. That increases the odds of death from a mountain lion by a factor of 50 / 13.4, making the ratio 1150.

http://tchester.org/sgm/lists/lion_attack_odds.html

----------------------------------------------------------------
and from :http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/releases/?req=20080708d
Mountain lion attacks on humans are equally rare. Only three attacks on humans in Texas have been reported since 1980, all in remote areas of West Texas.

Likewise, from 1890 to 2001, only 98 mountain lion attacks were reported across the United States and Canada and of those only 17 were fatal. Conversely, each year about 20 people die from injuries sustained during dog attacks, and more than 200,000 individuals receive injuries from dogs that are severe enough to require sutures.
