Target loads usually have higher quality components and pattern better.

Target loads also tend to be lighter loads with less shot and lower recoil. Obviously less shot isnt what's helping you. If you are recoil sensitive then that might be a factor. If you are shooting a ton of shells recoil can cause fatigue after a while that would also hurt your shooting. But I would say in a typical dove hunt that should not be a factor.

As for quality of components yeah you could say that at times target loads are better quality but not always. It isnt a bad rule of thumb but I would say it depends on what kind of shells you are looking at.

To me the best explanation is that it's mental....you are not hitting more birds because it's a target load...you just happen to be shooting better at the time you are using them.

+1 Good target loads like Win AA, Rem STS and B&P F2 Legend have better powder, better wads and shot with a high antimony content all of which lead to better patterns out of your barrel.

I have shot birds with the target loads and killed them, just shot them because it was what I had, the game loads have a little more umph to them.

I picked up a case of RIO 16 gauge shells today that I am shooting this afternoon, I like their loads in 20 and 12 and glad i got some in 16, 11 bucks a box

i shoot with redgun..and i was shooting the 100ct box that wal-mart sells doing good, then i grabbed the 20ga my wife was using shooting win aa target loads and missed 5 out of 5 due to target loads being way slower than field loads..i think that would be more important than quality of shell...make sure all of your shells shoot close to the same fps 1150 fps target loads vs 1325fps field loads at 20yrds is a big difference but at 30 and 40 yrds its a huge difference

I FIND THAT VERY HARD TO BELIEVE. YOU JUST NEED TO INCREASE YOUR LEAD. OR PUT A CHOKE IN THAT MATCHES WHAT DISTANCE YOU THINK YOU WILL BE SHOOTING. IT IS A FACT THAT THE TARGET LOADS PATTERN BETTER THAN ANY CHEAPO SHELLS.

OR JUST STICK WITH THE 12GA

hey rackjudge what do you find hard to believe? i was saying that he might be used to giving more distance/lead to the target, hence using slower shells will hit more targets..its all about timing

I used to load heavy field loads using # 7 1/2 shot but now i'm thinking about changing to # 8 shot.
