I've been waterfowling in East Texas and North Texas all my life, but I'm now working in Austin. I'd like to find some places around Austin to hunt. I've checked out the public stuff from Texas Parks and Wildlife. However, I'd like to look at some other lakes and water in the area.
PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS POST WITH NAMES OF LAKES.
If you've duck hunted around Austin before and would like to point me in the right direction please send me a PM. I do not want to steal your spots or anything, I just would like to know what lakes, creeks, sloughs, etc. are legal and accessible for the public.
Thank you. Like I said, PM's only.
P.S. if you're looking for a hunting partner I have a seasoned retriever and a mojo, for what it's worth.

No ducks in central Texas Check www.TPWD.state.tx.us for legal hunting areas. Any lake on the Colorado River is off limits.

Birddog,
Have you purchased the TPWD Annual Use Permit? You may want to get the permit as it comes with the map book. That book has all of the WMAs which list if it has water fowl hunting.
The other book you may want to purchase is the Texas Waterfowl, put out by Texas Fish & Game. Academy has them and it will get you started.

We may have found some in teal season, but like everyone else said there are no ducks in cen. tex. They don't stop here on the way down. They just go on down to the coast. But if I do happen to find some around here. I might could help ya out.

Way better, except i have zero extra time on my hands down here. this weekend i dont have much work to do, so ive set it aside to do nothing but hunt and fish all weekend. gonna bust some dove fri evening out near gonzales, and then fix the boat up and hopefully take it out sat evening or something. that and i need to get my tree stand up.

Other than Granger WMA, the private landowners farm ponds usually hold good amount of ducks in the Austin-area each year and it's not entirely, 'No, I don't allow hunting on my land' by all landowners, but it sure doesn't hurt to take a weekend or when you're on the way home to stop and ask the folks who live on those properties. It may not happen overnight, but talking with them over a period of time and especially not the day before season or in your camo clothes to ask for permission.
Heck, without trying, I was given permission to over 3500 acres adjacent to Fayette County lake and then across the highway all the way to the river with over 12 large ponds to hunt on and scattered throughout both tracts. Hunting, trapping & fishing permission was given to me over 8 years ago and I plan to utilize it this year for the first time. You got to get out and meet a few folks and get to know them and they you before some trust between the two parties is secured. If you respect their land, they'll take notice and should have access for years to come. Always remember them during the Holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc.) and they'll always be appreciative.
The Colorado River below Austin headed East or South...kinda meanders a little, is worth scouting for sure.

Hmmm, the Colorado River is a dang long river and you have to know the river itself not to get into TROUBLE (boat-wise & landowner-wise) it's not a new area and lots of folks hunt it.
Big deal, dang, when has it gotten so stinky bad not to help another hunter, angler or trapper out?
