Sunday morning at 1130 my nephew and i hit the road bound for Abitibi. Had to make a 45 minute pit stop at the cottage to pickup gear and had a few anxious moments with the truck. Truck is brand new and i misjudged the range and we almost ran out of diesel in the middle of nowhere. Found some with less than 2 litres left in the tank. Tank is 136 litres and put 134.2 litres in when i filled it. Got to hotel fine had a few drinks and hit the sack.

The next morning dawned sunny, clear, no wind and few degrees above freezing. Absolutely perfect. At the end of the road preparing for the 8km ride by snowmobile to the lake:

We went in on the Munro Lake Road and drove 20 km in to where the trail starts. Road condition was terrible and it took 90 minutes each way to travel the 20km (12 miles). Truck could have done it faster without the snowmobile trailer but that trailer is a highway trailer and any faster and i fear it would have come apart. Few pics of the road:

The trail in was in fantastic shape and the smoothest i ever remember it. Some years it is horrible. Set a personal best and covered the 8k in 12 minutes towing the toboggan:

We set up about 2km out from the end of the trail. 24 inches of clear solid ice and 9 fow. Weather both days was sunny and warm and all fishing was done open air:

Both days saw many walleye, sauger, goldeye and even some perch caught. We kept a limit of nice walleye and put a whack back. Also kept about 20 goldeye for the smoker. Sorta lost track but i think it was about 24 walleye, 15 or 16 sauger and a ton of goldeye.

Select pics:

Largest Walleye was 21 inches and a bunch 17 to 19 inches. Was a great few days other than sunburned faces which i will happily accept.

Really like it. Have put just under 2,000 miles on it in the last 8 days. 1250 miles of that was towing the snowmobiles on this last trip. Of that 1250 about 50 miles of it was nasty snow, ice, mud and flooded sections with a bazillion holes and rocks on very poorly maintained bush roads. Never once felt like it even challenged the capability of the truck - was mostly worried about breaking the axle or springs on the trailer. Nephew was in awe of it.

Also, what is a goldeneye?

Looks like what we call a shad. Very soft fleshed fish. Mainly used as a bait or forage fish down here

Similar to and in the same family as shad. Also soft fleshed. Brined and smoked they are delicious. Any other way they are gross.

I went Walleye fishing once in Nebraska. Caught a bunch. Were not great fighters but man, were they delicious. We were trolling and caught some black and white crappie as well, I thought there were no better a fish than a Crappie, until I ate the walleye.

Yep, walleye is my favorite eater. Yellow perch are good too and about on par with crappie. Arctic char are as good as walleye but the distance and lengths one has to go to find them makes them out of reach most times. Walleye on the other hand are easy to find and catch in my travel circle.

Sampled the fare at many northern MN boat in restaurants/bars. Do a lot of work for gold mines based out Fort Frances (CDN side of the line across from International Falls) and have friends with boats on the Rainy River and Rainy Lake on the CDN side. We often shoot across the line and register at an ATM type customs machine that scans your passport and is found in many of the waterfront bars. Then cruise around fishing and stopping for drinks and food at the various establishments. Great way to spend a summer's day.
