I am sure this has been addressed many times. However, I have a 10 year old daughter who has asked me to take her turkey hunting. I have always used a 20 or 12 gauge. I don't believe she can handle one of those yet. I have also never hunted turkey with a 410 and am looking for any advice on if this is even a good idea with that load. Basically is this ethical to hunt turkey with a 410? If so any advice on guns, ammo, gear that would be helpful for a youth hunter. Thanks!

It is ethical, especially with the TSS shot. Search back on this forum and there are several threads showing the 410 can be very effective.

I have only killed one turkey with a 410 and did it just to do it though TSS wasn't available at that time. Carried a Contender with 10 inch barrel in the shoulder holster a couple years before i got one with it. Strutter at 10 yards beard was a half inch longer than the barrel. 3 inch # shot for that one but needed to be close with that firearm.

.410 with tungsten is ridiculous lethal, sighting in at the cost of shells sucks, but its a great choice.

The Stevens 301 is a great, and incredibly affordable turkey gun. It's light, but has enough weight so the recoil isn't too bad. I got the 20 gauge for my daughter and will probably end up using it this season - it's a great shotgun and also available in .410. It has a TSS choke, and shooting any TSS should be pretty lethal at standard ranges. Put a red dot on it (it comes with a rail) and she should be good to go.

I’ve used the 301 for two seasons with a red dot. TSS #9 shot has been very efficient.
