The wife loves having deer all over the place, but this was a bad year for that. A fellow not too far from here has way more deer and hogs, and he does have a supplemental feeder. I mentioned that to the wife, and she said “well, get us one”. So I will “get us one” and maybe two.

What do I need? What kind? How large? What feeder and what supplemental feed?

All Seasons Feeders (ASF) timed protein feeder. I don't own one, but believe it's what you're looking for. Put alfalfa-based protein pellets in it.

Thanks to you two. Before I buy one or two, I need to decide between an electric thrower or a passive feeder. I’m worried that the deer would eat me out of house and home if I went with a passive ‘eat what you want and when you and how much you want’ type. I lean toward a timed feeder type.

personally, I would go with a timed feeder if you are just wanting to draw them in, similar to a corn thrower, at certain times when you want to look at them. I have heard outrageous costs associated to free choice protein feeders depending on your herd population (and coon population). The timed feeders might run a bit more on the front end due to having the electronics but only dumps out a certain amount of feed at regulated times.

Take six foot of wire net, tie it in a circle with a one panel overlap to make a basket, pound a T-post in the ground, put the basket over it, fill w/ 4 bags of cottonseed and be done with it. Except for keeping it filled.

That All Seasons protein thrower that Creekrunner mentioned looks like the way to go for the back of the place. A small gravity type might be right for the yard feeder.

I got a small (80#) gravity feeder. Set it up and filled it. Put some corn in the mouth of it and a bunch of corn and pellets under it. There has not been a deer to that feeder since. Is it the smell of plastic, or did I leave my scent all over everything and smell bad? Oh well…

It's new, they'll get used to it just give them time.

Also if you don't already have some, get yourself some dog proof traps and start killing coons. It won't take them long to put a hurtin' on that feeder.

I have a metal table; about 3 ft tall, 7 ft long about 3 ft wide with a 3 inch lip around the top. It sits next to a crank up corn feeder about 100 yards from the house. I don’t live there so a lot of wildlife use it. I dump various kinds of feed in it.

However, if coons get to it the deer don’t stand a chance. I don’t live there so I can’t say it helps much. I have a picture of 8 of them eating that high protein stuff.

So far, no pictures of coons eating the pellets. No deer eating them either, but the deer are at least back to the feeder.

I have tried these for a year and I have not seen deer on them yet.

Put put a 2,000+lb timed protein feeder. We prefer double down, but we hunt near the distribution town.
Also put out a 600 lb corn feeder.
Im saying go large so you aren’t filling every month or two!


Free choice is nice but we can go through 2,000 lbs a week with three stations sometimes.

I have not seen one deer on my small gravity protein feeder. The neighbor, on the other hand, has deer coming to his protein feeder. He feeds a berry flavored version. Apparently my protein is Tofu flavored. Even the coons haven’t tried it.

What kind of protein did you buy?

Its been two weeks since you put it up, they shouldve been eating it by now.

Old pellets?? Its happened to me before, the stuff was 4 months old when they delivered it.

Embarrassed to say that I threw away the bag, so don’t know what it was called. I’ll call the neighbor and see what that berry flavored stuff is, and I’ll replace the pellets in my feeder. If I can get the local deer to show interest in a protein pellet, I’ll get one of those All Seasons timed feeders.

Anything that smells good to them will bring them in and will keep bringing them in.

Theyll consume more or less of it depending on the time of year obviously.

Antlermax now has lemongrass extract in it, they loved that when it was fresh. L & E is a for sure one too and not as expensive but can be a little dusty.
