x2... plus with the shrubbery, there is more browse down at deer level. We have decent antlers where we hunt, but I think it may be b/c of the age structure and possible nutrients in our red dirt.

Not saying your deer don't have enough to eat just saying comparing forage in S. TX is not comparing apples to apples. I'm just saying S.Tx has a better soil(higher plant nutirtion) then East Tx soil.

No name calling or questioning of intellect here either.

I'm not saying your higher plant nutrition doesn't play a roll but comparing the herd genetics of S Tx to those in E Tx is not apples to apples either.

I don't think it is apples to apples to compare much of anything between regions, counties and in some cases areas within the same county.

Just saying cheers

For the records East Tx deer are relocation/ re-introduction deer from South Texas and up north.

East tx is big place... big differance between north East texas and south east TX. I've seen some brusiers from Lufkin and Livingston that would rival just about any South TX deer. Personally think that the name of this thread probley should be changed to North East TX AR's.

You want to know where I hunt. I hunt in San Saba County, Waller County, and Fayette County.

Just because you see green everywhere like I do year round in the pine tree timber lands, doesn't mean that you your deer have a lot to eat. Also comparing cattle to deer is apples to oranges. The only eat the same things in stress periods. East Texas soils are more acidic, not good. Pine trees and viney trees/shrubs do well. Mast crops only last a short time and don't provide deer with enough food and at the time they need it for antler development.

No one is comparing the deer in East Texas to those in South Texas or anywhere else for that matter. However it has been proven that antler spread characteristics can be classified in general for age classes.

I will gaurentee that when the herd is healthy (nutrition and age) shooting deer that are over the 13" AR's will not be a problem.

Ditto, I might not argue about it anymore on this thread but that doesn't mean I'm giving in and changing my stance against ARs, my fingers are just blistered from typing. I have to heal them before rifle season so I will be able to pull the trigger on whatever legal deer I decide to put in my freezer.....bar's open guys! cheers
