She’s going to college in NYC and rides the subway a lot. She saw something the other day that concerned her and she told her mom that she carries a knife now. Well, it’s not much of a knife. It’s an old pocketknife. I’ll send her a real knife. Thinking about a Benchmade Griptilian AXIS like mine, but maybe something smaller and lighter might be better. It needs to be quick to deploy. Suggestions?

All practical means of self-defense are prohibited.

Criminals are running rampant, emboldened by soft targets and permissive prosecutors.

Any weapon she carries has to be in hand and immediately deployed. Consider a slungshot/"monkey paw".

Also, Krav Maga is a better choice than BJJ; you don't want to be grappling on the floor with multiple assailants.

This was my first thought. I wouldn't get on a NY subway with anything short of an M1 Carbine

tough situation...if it were my daughter/grandaughter, i'd second the moving her to a more friendly atmosphere. MMA training, taser, pepper spray, and a small fixed blade neck knife is what i would suggest for my daughter in that situation if I didn't have the option of moving her

I have no say in the matter of where she goes to college. She wanted that school because of a specific curriculum. I argued against NYC, but all they heard was blah blah blah.

Anyway, I got her a Benchmade Mini Bugout in white. Dang thing was expensive. I’ll give it to her at Christmas, along with advice to not let ANYONE know she has it. No doing her nails with it. Only use it under extreme danger. She already has a knife that she carries, but it’s junk.

I have this knife. It's pretty sweet, but the trigger is a little firm for a female to deploy the blade.

I'm no expert, but I'd recommend a push-dagger. They are easily concealed on a belt or in a pocket, hard to take away, and simple to use..grab and punch. The drawback, like any knife, is it's easy to hurt yourself with it.
I made some push daggers for the local swat team a bunch of years ago. They didn't want a sharpened edge, just a point for "poking." They claimed you didn't need to cut or slash.. just poking was very persuasive.

I’m 80 yoa and in pretty good shape. That said, I wouldn’t want to use a knife for self protection. Either get her out of there or give her a small 38 and self defense lessons. Also, situational awareness training. Dallas has also had a lot of problems on city buses but they are no longer talking about it.

Unarmed people like her and old goats like me are victims just waiting their turn.

That's a thoughtful concern for your daughter's safety. A Benchmade Griptilian AXIS is a solid choice, but you might also consider something like a Kershaw Blur or a Spyderco Delica for a smaller and lighter option with quick deployment. Just make sure she's aware of the laws and regulations about carrying a knife in NYC.

I carry a Griptilian, and really like it. Best pocketknife I’ve ever owned. But, it’s too big for the kid. I handled a lot of knives before I chose the Mini Bugout, but it should be just about right. And available in a short list of designer colors, which tells you right there it’s a girl’s knife.

I hate that she’s in NYC and that she rides the subway, but she will make her own decisions. She is very mentally tough, unlike her mentally lightweight brother. She carries a knife now, but it’s worthless and not legal probably, and she’d have to call a timeout to get the knife into action. Bottom line, if she’s gonna carry a knife, legal or not, she should at least have a good useful one.

Her mother rejected my suggestion of sending her a KaBar.

As a long time Martial artist including pro MMA I discourage you from her trying to defend with a knife. It takes a lot of real force on force training. Pepper spray and running shoes are a better bet.

I’m very far from anything in martial arts and agree 100%. A knife for self defense, especially for someone with zero know how or training is a terrible idea.

Obviously have to stab, no slashing. Teach her to stab repeatedly.

Carrying a knife is easy. Knowing how to deploy it and use it under stress or pressure is another. Most have no idea what they are doing or what they will do if confronted by a bad guy. Good luck!

For all the people saying "get her out of there", it's not the Grandparent's business to determine where their adult grandchildren are allowed to live or go to school unless they are the ones footing the bill. I think NYC is a great place to visit, but I would never live there. That being said, over 3 million people ride NYC subways every day without incident. Despite the number of crazies and homeless lingering, it's quite safe during normal hours (I personally do not ride it at night). Having protection is prudent, but there is a lot of fear mongering on this board.

She loves being in NYC. Seems odd to me. She does seem to use good common sense in moving about the city, so that gives me some comfort. As for the knife, she loves it.

The biggest concern that we, the family, have is that she won’t find a good looking Texas boy up there.

If she has time to get that knife out of her purse, deploy it, have time to think, could she spray the nut in the face? Maybe that’s illegal too.

Maybe get a doll so she can console the bad guys
