I have 2 of these in synthetic and saw a post on the trading forum about the recall. $200.00 for synthetic and $250 for laminate. Does anyone know about the recall?

these recalls amaze me...my dad bought a Walther .380 that was recalled, he never received a letter about the recall or anything, only reason he knew about it was because I saw something on here.

seems like there would be a system of getting these recalls out to the people who purchased the guns.

I just called Remington and they are closed today for staff training...

What they are giving back in coupon form for only other Remington products is less than the original price for both the ammo and the rifle. They are giving you back at least $100 less for the rifle.

I was looking on a 597 discussion board on another forum and all of the guys are keeping there's because the money they are giving you is not enough. Some even thought the value would go up on them since they are now recalled. I could understand them giving you that amount for a cash offer but this is for a coupon good for only Remington products!!!

I would agree. I sent one of them in last year due to misfiring consistently every other round. I originally took it to McClelland's for the repair and they could not solve the problem, they suggested I send it to Remington which I did. The gun was out of warranty and I was charged $145.00 to repair it.

I know Remington has me in the database and they did not notify me of this recall. So now I have 2 $300.00 rifles with optics and a $145.00 repair bill total out of pocket $745.00. Now they want to give me a Remington voucher for $200.00 each? This is not right, I really want to know what the problems are before I send them in.

Should I wait and see if they increase the voucher amount?

Should I keep them and hope they become a collectors item?

Guess I am just pizzed off.

I think this has to do with receivers exploding. I also think it may be with any semi auto 17hmr.

If ya got one keep it clean, if y'all remember I had mine stick a bullet in the barrel not too long ago. I had noticed some small splits in the case necks not long before that and should have alerted then. Short neck's and steep shoulders are not friendly to auto's and sometimes they don't completely chamber, since then I clean it a little more and have never had another problem since.

I was finally able to get through to Remington today. From what I am told it is not Remington's problem, it is the manufacturer of the ammunition.

Federal holds the patent on .17HMR ammunition and they are the only company that produces it. Federal has stated to Remington that the ammunition is not compatible with any semi-automatic firearm and the consumer should stop using the guns immediately. I for one am going to keep my guns, the only problem I have had is one of them misfiring.

Thoughts?

You can do what you like. It is your gun. If you are upset with getting so little in return, what do you hope to eventually get? The pics I saw of an exploded cartridge was Hornady. I think the problem lies with the cartridge and the action style of these semi-autos. How accurate will you be with the gun in the future? Will you always wonder if this time is the time?

I understand what you are saying Sasquatch. I do not want to risk injury to myself or anybody else, what I want is another .17HMR and Remington only has the 597. The voucher goes towards any Remington product not other manufacturers.

Do you have that picture of the exploded cartridge?

I may be mistaken....but I thought Hornady had the patent on the .17HMR....Hornady Magnum Rimfire!

"The .17 HMR was the result of a joint project involving Hornady, Marlin, and Ruger. It was introduced in 2002 and has become the most successful cartridge introduction since the .22 WMR. The initial sales of 17 HMR rifles were so strong that the demand for ammunition far outstripped supply for the first couple of years. Hornady was the first supplier of .17 HMR ammunition, but within two years CCI, Federal, and Remington all adopted the caliber."

Could be, this is what I was told by the Remington representative.

CCI actually manufactures all the 17HMR ammo to the same specs for each different brand, the only difference is the plastic tip color on each brand. The problem comes from using this type of ammo in a blowback action, keeping the action clean helps, but it appears to be inherently dangerous to continue shooting a semi-auto 17HMR.

To me the casing seems really weak for a semi-auto. I shoot a bolt action CZ, and this thing is a SWEET shooting gun. Can put a 1 inch pattern at 100.

My son was shooting his 597 and a round ‘exploded’ in the chamber last year. It was so bad that the magazine was blown apart and the receiver was damaged. If he had not been wearing eye protection I am sure he would have lost his eye. He received a cut on his check and some burns on his face. Before someone says we did something wrong or the gun was dirty, just know he is 17 and has been hunting with me since he was 2 years old. I should have said something sooner about this as it happened months ago and I am just now getting around to doing something about it. I too think the $200.00 is low and not all of our ammo is in boxes, but at this point I was ready to throw it away. We need to get the word out better as I had not heard anything about it. Please pass this on to anyone that has one of these guns. I hate to loose it as we too shoot a lot and this was a great shooting gun.

I have a 597 and have never had any problems with it. When I heard about the recall, I called Remington and they gave me the run around about why the gun was being recalled. i told them it wasnt worth the trouble to send it in and get 1/2 of what I paid for it and they told me "do NOT shoot the remington ammo in that gun".

Remington does not make the ammo. Are they saying you can shoot other brands? I am confused.

Remington may not make the ammo, but it is being marketed under their name.
I am sure they told him to not shoot their branded ammo to avoid possible suits since it appears it is the ammo issue, not the rifle.

IMO after choyt's post, anyone using this rifle is crazy as a sheet house mouse. Take your beating sendem back or make trot line weights out of them. Another thing I would do is give remy all the bad press I could in addition to telling them to keep the 200 credit if they cant pay a fair price in cash. After taking a beating on this deal why would anyone buy from their products again??. Obviously a severe lack of testing went into this rifle or they would have known it was not safe. Same for the safety issues of years past. I dont own one of these rifles but I do have a couple of others. I think I will sell them and get another brand because these guys dont have any regard for their customers.

Just on the hummer, the 22lr is fine as far as this particular problem goes.

I really hope this doesn't put a damper on .17hmr production, I would really hate to see such an awesome cartridge get cut because of some crappy r&d from Remington.

Wyatt, the R&D is wild speed variations from the ammo. People were experiencing 200+ fps variations in the ammo round to round. In a bullet that goes 2000 something fps, 10% is a big variation. Magazines were blowing out, as well as more serious stuff.
