Years ago, say the 1950's and 1960's everyone was going around with a Stetson with a slightly lower crown and a narrower brim. Fort Worth crease. I am pretty sure they were called a "rifleman" Stetson because a rifle scope wouldn't hit the brim while shooting. I suppose you could buy an open road and get it blocked into a Fort Worth crease but what ever happened to those old hats? They were a lot easier to put aside while driving in a vehicle.

I don't know what a Ft. Worth crease is but when you buy a felt hat they will crease it any way you want and trim the brim to whatever size you want.

A good hat maker can make whatever you think up. Problem is finding a good hat maker.

I remember those shorter crown and shorter brim hats, my wife bought one for me in a silver belly when we were dating. Personally, I never cared for it because it looked like something an old man wore back in those days instead of a short brim fedora (Dick Tracey hat) to have the western appearance. But I agree, find a place that creases hats and they can likely trim the brim down and set the crown however you like it.

There are a couple of people, a gal and guy, at the Resistol factory store in Garland that have been there a long time and know how to crease a hat. I run over there every time I need a re-crease and clean.

And the folks at Western Legacy Hats in Weatherford know what they are doing.

Also, Catalena Hatters in College Station

Had a guy at a Cavenders assure me he could trim a brim for me on a new hat. He messed it up, then wanted me to pay for it. I don’t think so.

Standard Hat Works in Waco can make you anything you want. Been in the business since 1909.

My son is a Mgr at a Fortune 100 company. In his younger days he was the hatter at Standard Hat Works in Waco.
We designed a bar tap steamer he showed it off last week at Dallas Market Hall. It was a big hit. If anyone around Lorena TX. Need your hat shaped he can do it.

There is a hat maker in Longview that makes a great hat. Mikes! Made me a BOP about twenty years ago and it still looks like new. Real beaver and grey in color. My Sunday and Lodge meeting hat but has been well worth the money and a good guy to do business with. Mike's Hatters. Mike Helms

Okay-old old thread but I finally got an answer. Stetson still sells the hat I was looking for It isn't normally in the catalog. The ypical Steon has a 4" brim, the open road a 3" ( too small) What I was looking for is the Range. a 3 1/2" brim

https://stetson.com/products/range-6x-cowboy-hat-silverbelly

Okay okay, now for the boots. I want bull hide, riding/roper heel with a shelf for spurs, Thumb holes. pegged soles. Any idea for an off the shelf? Don't really want to drop a lot on custom.

Any decent hatter can cut a brim down to whatever size you want.

Don't know where you live Dave but you might check this place out. Have been there once and they had a large selection. I've heard but don't know for sure that they ask one price but will sell for another if you you ask. They have been advertising that they are going out of business for about 5 years but they are still there.
