First thing this morning I got word that my season opener is a done deal out west. Our group of 10 guys will have sole access to 5K acres around Seymour and the number of birds is looking good.

I had planned to take just my 10 year old son out to the woods to shoot some 1/2 oz loads in a heavy old 410 to get him over his intimidation of shooting. I've been careful not to push him, but dadgummit, the kid is NOT a little 10 year old and he wants to shoot - just gun shy. My 9 year old Amazon highly competitive and athletic daughter decided she wanted to go shoot, too. Bonus. So I go over safety for the 9 millionth time - all good. Get the ol' OU loaded, cocked, and ready. I put an old can up 10 yards away. Also helped them hold the gun up with one hand and made sure they kept the butt mounted correctly to their shoulders with the other. No problemo, both did great! Not only did they get over their initial fear, they are stoked! After 5 shots each I had my son shoot by himself, making sure he was all squared away before letting him squeeze the trigger. He can't wait to hunt now! Next step is get him on moving targets. I have less than two months but he'll be ready.

Icing on the cake. I get the dawg and the kids loaded up and start on my way back. There was a tall (I like 'em that way) hot arsed blonde wearing a DU shirt walking her lab down a country road. I'm a very happily married man, but holy crow that was incredible - a ducky country angel.

So to finish off the day I went down to Wally World and bought the Charles Daly 20 ga youth for my son that I've had my eye on. Heck of a good day to start off the holiday weekend, which will be spent at the lake chasin' bass and running jug lines.

Y'all have a good 4th!

Larry

Hashknife Ranch (E. W. Hunt), but Ranger Creek looks really nice.
