Primer Went Off on Dillon Reloader Today

My ears just stopped ringing enough to sit down and post this. A primer went off on my reloader this afternoon. I'm guessing that it would be about like having a 22 long rifle fired from in front of me over my shoulder.
In a 8 x 16 room it was pretty loud. Since I already have moderately severe Tinnitus, (ringing ears 24/7/365), and moderate hearing loss, this really set my ears off. They are still ringing. I'm sure my hearing is further damaged.
Since primers sometimes hop out of the primer charge bar I visually inspect the primer in the primer charge bar on every case before pulling up on the handle to seat it. Today one popped. After I made sure my drawers were still clean I saw that the primer went in at about a 45 degree angle. After thousands and thousands of rounds loaded on this Dillon 550B this was a first.
I don't know what else to say except that it can happen. There was no real physical injury risk since I wear plastic reading glasses. It was just an ear / hearing loss injury.

Scary moment no doubt! I hope your hearing isn't damaged more than previously known. Murphy's law I reckon.

I always worried about that but it didnt happen while I was reloading. The company I work for has a facility where we press perforating charges. Basically, they are small shaped charges. Occasionally, one detonates under the pressure of assembly. The walls and doors in the building are built with blast pressure relief vents but multiply a primer by about 100,000% and that's what it's like. These charges will blast a pencil-sized hole through 6' of concrete with no projectile. I'm not sure how they convince employees to run those presses.

UUUUHHMMMMM can I get some of those?!?!?!?
What you really want is primer cord. It burns at over 5,000 fps. Basically, an explosion.

Oh yeah. That's the stuff you can wrap around trees and take them down, right? Who needs a chainsaw!!!

I dumped a shell casing of powder in an ashtray once... then forgot about it. Went and layed down in bed, smoking a ciggarette; had the ashtray on my bare chest, and put the ciggarette out in it. That was the day I quit smokin.

Whoa!
Whan I was a kid I swiped a primer from my uncles reloading stuff, took it out to the driveway, and hit it with a hammer. I was about nine or ten, I think. After I recovered from the shock, I felt around on my face to see if there was any blood or wounds I would have to explain or any little chunks of concrete that would have to be dug out of my lips. I was never, ever tempted to do it again.

Just imagine sort of being in the "groove". If you use a progressive reloader you know what I mean. I start off slow; make sure everything is flowing smoothly, and start producing ammo. I was listening to Glenn Beck on Fox News. I really was paying attention to what I was doing, but apparently missed this primer being lopsided in the charge bar. BANG!!
After thinking about this some more regarding noise, the noise was actually deflected sideways out from under the case. The primer never actually made it into the case pocket. If the primer had gone off inside the case pocket it would have been much louder.
What really hacks me now is the thought of thinking I need ear plugs to reload. That is unimaginable. Reloading, listening to the television, music, etc. has always been sort of an enjoyable therapeutic thing.

I decap and prime all my brass by hand. Only thing I do with the progressive is charge, set the bullet, and crimp. It just seems a lot easier to me that way. I can sit in the recliner and watch TV and use my little hand loader to deprime and resize, and then run the hand primer on them.

Sounds like an interesting experience. The guy who taught me to load used to prep his brass in his living room. He had a small press to decap, resize, and bell the case mouth, then he would use a Lee tool to prime the brass. He did all this while watching TV. All was well until he dropped a primer in the carpet and his wife vaccumed it up. Big bang, ruint vaccum, unhappy wife...
My wife tossed a tray of 100 primers at me once while cleaning off my workbench. I took one out, put it on my anvil and told her to whack it with a hammer. Needless to say, she has never ever again even thought about touching a primer...

When I quit reloading, I had thousands of primers. I had bought over 10,000 at a garage sale. I thought about doing something stupid with them but just put them in some oil cans and soaked them for a few days in penetrating oil. Who knew they'd ever be in short supply?

I was trying to light a brush pile on fire one day when it was raining. I poured 5 gallons of diesel on it but couldn't get the diesel to light. I poured gasoline on the diesel to get it going but, no luck. I had about 6 lbs of rifle and pistol powder left so I poured it all down the middle of the pile. When I lit it off, it sent a column of white fire straight up out of the pile. When it quit, the whole pile was on fire.
