who hunts timber company land

just wondering who else hunts a timber company lease?
reason i ask is im just a bit curious as to how much clear cutting is going on, on some other clubs.
we got cut heavy last season, at least 5 thousand acres(im being conservative with my guess,wouldnt suprise me if it was more) out of our 13 thousand was cut last season. not much replanting has been done either but they have replanted some.
i didnt think they would be cutting that heavy again but i could be wrong, today when i was out there i got to the back of the lease and bam there it was another huge chunk gone.
i know they used to do it in 100ac sections but those days are long gone.
sorry for the rant just curious if any other clubs are being cut this heavy?

We lease our East Texas lease from a guy in Oklahoma that owns a timber cutting company. We have nearly 700 acres and about 5 years ago, right before deer season, approx. 1/3 (combined spots total) of our lease was clear cut at one time. It kinda sucked then but young pines are now growing in those clear cuts and we have harvested a couple of good bucks in those areas in the past 2 years.

short pines are great but they gotta replant wich we arent seeing to much of. just been curiuos if other leases are still being cut this hard.

Everything is getting cut, especially the road buffers and hardwood bottoms. My entire stand area of 400acres got wiped out this past year, and on my old lease, the 2K acres I was hunting all by my lonesome was done the same way this past year. The new "owners" are having to do that much cutting to try and pay off the debt to the "former land owner".

yeah, they had it set up to pay for it over X amt of years and I'm thinking were predicting the timber/building products to pick up and it didn't. Have they come in and select cut anything or is there any timber in there around that age?

after being 3rd rowed they tend to cut in that 4-6yr range, select cut, they tend to leave alone for a good while to get the big saw logs, but not many places in the area take logs that big anymore. btw, flooded for a little more than an hour out there this morning.

Relax, my family leased 6000 acres of timber company land from the mid 60's all the way through the early 90's in south Arkansas and north Louisana. I've seen this a lot and the results that follow. Clear cutting will actually improve your situation. If I were you I would set up a deer stand on the edge of the freshest cut over and watch what happens. You will be amazed at the number and size of the deer you see. Clear cutting creates a lot of fresh, tender, green growth and if they leave any of the tree tops lots of bedding cover. It will atract them like a magnet to steel. Some of the best hunting I have ever experienced was hunting in a cut over that were less than a month old.
The only draw back I saw on this was after about 4 years they grow so thick they are really hard to hunt, but a little scouting and some food plots will usually remedy this. In about 7 to 10 years the pines get tall enough to start shading out some of the under growth and if they do a controlled burn that will open up even more and bring a whole new round of fresh green vegetation that is extremely nutrient because of the ash deposits and again another big deer draw.

they spray pretty regular on these particular places after the saplins are planted. Not much for the critters to eat, just a thick place for them to take cover after a cpl of years.
But do like putting a stand on the edge of them along SMZs and sectioning off a "turkey track" in hopes they won't replant it. After a cpl of years, it turns back into some great hunting.

yeah, the bad thing is, you know how rain is in the area...can flood in one area, and get a cpl sprinkles a 1/2 mile down the road.

Clear cut areas and their edges are great hunting land. A favorite first place to check with field glass in the Northwest is your local clear cuts.

I was curious, we see a ton of them in Angelina Co, but since being out in that area, I've only killed one cotton mouth and a coral snake. And that was on the same night during that last trip in.

Our lease hasn't been cut in 4 years now. Supposedly we're not going to have any sections cut for another 10 years or so...not that I'd necessarily mind if they did cut. As has been established clear-cuts are great for hunting.
Only complaint I have is that last time they cut- back in Spring of 2005- the @--holes decided to replant in November. I remember sitting in my dad's blind, scanning the cut and seeing a freaking skidder parked behind a small stand of oaks trees...I know that's there business but how are you gonna ask someone to pay you for trespass rights and then impede what they paid you for?? Anyway, things have cooled off and my dad's killed some nice bucks since then so no one's complaining.

lol, absolutely no...we've had them walk equipment all over our foodplots when there were roads that went around them. Some are courteous and will ask you if they can help improve shooting lanes and hook you up with very nice food plots if you catch them down there. We had some cutting on my dad's leave mid-nov a few years back. On Thanksgiving morning I shot a nice wide 7pt that decided to take a stroll through the middle of their parked equipment.

ya rifle, seems like they used to be alot more courteous. this weekend when i was out there i could see where they had been back in my spot in the shade eating lunch and left trash everywhere. i mean napkins, plastic chit and all kinds of crap. well i go back in my spot look around and noticed some napkins next to a tree i had a pipe feeder on. i ride my fourwheeler up to it and they had taken a chit right there under it.
you should see the trash they have left all over the lease...hydraulic oil buckets, tires, parts of skidders, you name it they prolly left it. the old companies were much cleaner i know that much

Amen! My Grandad has for as long as I can remember cut 1/4 every 5 years. Meaning the pine would be harvested at 20 years of age. We have a 60/40 mix of pine to hardwood. So, we would not get wiped out at one time. The year of the cutting and the next were historically the best. Last summer he used a different company out of Texarkana and they screwed up more crap and left more trash than the old man from Linden had done in the previous 30 years. What a bunch of jack axxes! Backed into my buddy stand and bent it and somehow, two other stands just walked off! I guess these new fellas dont care about anything that aint theirs!
