Thinking about building a pen out of T-posts and hog panels to dump corn into for deer while keeping out hogs. Any recommendations on how big the pen should be?

Thanks!

the bigger the better. Someone will chime in shortly on the recommended amt of panels.

should of been x2 not one anyway just kidding, Ive got one pen with 11 and one with 10 but mine let the hogs in, they are to keep the cows out. and they are larger because I dont want the cows reaching over the hog pannels for the corn dont really have hogs and if they show up bang. I hunt in taylor county by lawn never seen a hog or even a picture of one at one of the feeders and only have seen one hog at the other one KA-BOOM. Have been hunting there sence 1989. across the road I shoot at them every chance I get at my feeder there, sometimes 2 in one shot and sometimes I miss.

Any thoughts on 32X32 (2 panels per side square)?

thats big enough if thats all you want to spend. ive see some people have tiny feeder pens, and the deer are alittle crammed, but they dont mind. make sure you build it strong to hold the pigs out

First, don't build the pen in a square configuration--round is better. The bigger the better--I've seen smaller pens that allow one dominant deer get in and no more will even enter. I have had really good luck using t-posts and 10 hog panels; that makes a circle of roughly 50' diameter. I've seen it with 8-10 deer feeding at once, and in 3 years I haven't had a hog get through. No cows, either, though I'm surprised at that one.

I would recommend 8 panels (2 each side) as the minimum. 10 or 12 panels or more is better for the dominant deer reason given above. Depends on how much your budget can stand, but 8 should be the absolute minimum for maximum results. jmo based on what I've seen, other sizes may work for other folks.

10-11 can make a small food plot. Ive never thought about shape other than round, because I take my 4 wheeler and plow and plow it up and round is easier. The other thing I did was take 1 inch square tubing and welded a frame around each panel with 2 supports in the middle and made them more like gates, wire together. no weekness at all. If you do this no t-post are needed. No driving t-post Yes it cost more but my panels are 8-9 years old and good as new. If I want to move them, cut the wire holding them together, put them on a trailor and go. I know alot of people including myself worry about cost but devide it by how long you will use it. and it will be less hassel if you build good the 1st time.

I HAVE USED SIX PER PEN. I PUT THEM IN A CIRCLE. DON'T USE LESS THAN SIX. THEY FEEL A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE INSIDE A BIG PEN.

just built three this weekend, serious butt whip'n in the rocky ground of Kinney Co. We used 12 pannels in a circle.

Deer like it and don't seemed to feel pened in. We had some smaller one but the bigger buck didn't seem to ever jump in, but may just be our stubborn deer.

when in doubt make it big....

Minimum of 8 panels in my opinion. Also, like has been said, the rounded approach is much better. No weak corners. Overlap the panels a foot or so and bolt them together with rope clips and they are surprisingly strong. Easily stand up on their own. Space out some t-posts as needed to secure it. My buddy and I put up one just like this in just over an hour and it is doing great (but it was one of the few spots on the ranch where t-posts would go in without a jack-hammer...)

Unless you have goats or sheep why do it. raise your feeder up so the cows cant reach it.

I've built them with 5/6/7 panels in a round configuration and from now on I think 7 would be my minimum for protein feeders, much bigger for corn since the feeding area is scattered. The small pens don't seem to have much effect once they get used to them...
