I never go into the field without one anymore. They can be used in a couple of different ways. First is to call in a deer, with or without the help of rattlin horns. Second is to stop a moving deer. I have used my grunt calls in both situations for the last several years, i bought my first one about 10 years ago.

My go to call is from Primos. As long as it has a flex tube so you can immitate different age deer and different types of grunts ( coaxing, rutting, dominance, etc...) you should be fine.

Last year I had a buck running around my blind and feeder waking up the does and running off the smaller bucks. He had one thing on his mind, and it wasn't food. As he ran around my property I could hear him snorting and wheezing off in the distance. I feared it would get dark before he went to the feeder and I wouldn't get a shot, so I reached in my backpack and grabbed my grunt call. I blew a couple loud, but short deep tones and waited. 2 minutes later I blew a little softer and waited. As I was about to blow a 3rd time I glanced around to make sure he wasn't right behind me and sure enough he was standing there looking in my direction. He was going to kick some tail as soon as he could figure out which buck was challenging him. He got to within 20 yards and I had to take the shot or I might have lost him due to my scent. I shot and he took off running. I thought I made a good shot, but there were no signs of blood where I shot him. I started looking in the direction he ran off and found the blood trail! He made it 40 yards and dropped. The date was Nov. 28 and I believe that was the peak of the rut or the beginning. I don't think it would have worked any other time. The important thing is that I had one, and it should always be with you just in case.

ive called up a bunch of deer with a grunt call i bought from wal mart, only thing is that it broke this yr during a very important time.... regardless, i use grunts in all kinds of situations, most of the time i will call up small bucks just because i like to call animals. But i did call a nice 10 point i saw chasing does up to within thirty yards that i had stalked for a long time. i was in the middle of a field sitting behind a tiny mesquite tree and i decided not to take him then he finnally winded me. this is just one of the many ive called up using the grunt. ive also called them before ive seen them right up too me, and other such things, but be careful, sometimes they will come in a lot faster than u expected, and sometimes they will take forever. I just love to be able to let out a call and hear another deer answer back.

Grunt calls work if they are not over used and the deer doesn't get your scent. Over use and the deer getting your scent and then spotting you will make it almost worthless for the rest of the season. You want one that has a deep tone, most of the commercial ones do not give that deep of a sound. The deeper sounds replicate an older buck's sounds. This causes the younger ones to either scatter or come to the challenge, and the older bucks will usually come to the challenge, they don't want some other buck messing with their does.

I always have one with me. I have grunted up too many deer to think they won't work. I even got one buck to stop and look back after I shot at him. I think mine is a Primos but it is probably 7 or 8 years old. If it is a slow morning sometimes I will grunt a couple of times just to see if something will show up. Just don't use it all the time or play it like a kazoo

Like the good thoughts posted already, you dont call much. Its used on an as needed basis. If you are rattling horns, obviously you would use it more, but just sitting in the stand, it only takes a little bit, they'll either take the bait or they wont.

I don't like using a grunt call from a box stand, but when I'm hunting out of my climber I will put it to work and have called in a bunch of bucks using just the grunt, grunt & the Can, grunt & rattle. One thing I will say though is that in my many days in the woods, I have never been able to get one to cross a creek, big slough, etc. (small drains excluded)

I like to think I am speakin' the language, so I tend to buy Primos.

I have a Brush-Monkey call from Bass Pro that I use. I use it on the way to my blind every day as I walk to my stand. This way any bucks in the area think a Trophy buck is chasing a doe before dawn. I have shoot many bucks in the face right after the sun rises using this method. We feed Indian corn at our feeders and the deer love it and stay at the feeder longer.

I like the "Lust Chamber" call. It really seems to get the buck worked up. It's so good that if I use it too often...I have to get out of the blind and pee on my hocks.

I always use one during the rut and it's only worked twice for me but both times they were shooter bucks. I've had the call so long, I forget what brand it is!

Where can you get one of the "lust chamber" calls? I have looked on the internet and it scares me as to what comes up. I"m not sure I want to pee on my hocks, but any new call that works I'd like to try out.

Thanks WTGUIDE, I'll look for it at the next hunting show. I see by your name you may be a guide? Do you have any other tips for us non-guides on how to call in a deer? I've been hunting many years and love to shoot my 30-30 at whitetail, and hogs. Do you have any special scents you like better than the others? I use code blue, and never wash my hunting clothes to keep that outdoor scent. After each season I take my hunting clothes and put them in a bag until the next year. I have to air them out for a day or two, but then on they go and I can't tell if they smell me or not. My blind is 60 yards from the feeder and as I get older I keep moving it closer. Before too long I will be sitting on top of my feeder. Any help you can pass our way would be great. I'll try just about inything in the woods to make the time in the wilderness better. But I enjoy it so much, that I could just sit under a tree without a feeder, or a blind and wait for the deer. For me it is not about the smell of gun powder but the time in the woods. I do like my deer meat, and wild hogs with mashed potatos however. We feed Indian corn and the deer really seem to likke it, and stay at the feeder longer.
