First thing this morning my Lab, Ginger and I went out to open my chicken coop , still dark, and WHAMMO !! she got blasted by a skunk !!!
First thing I did was to give her a bath, and that really seem to help, but the smell is still lingering !!
Anyone have any suggestion, what to do next, perhaps another bath ????

Probably a lot of ''home remidies'; such as tomatoe juice etc.I would pick up the phone and call your vet.

Hey Guys....
I called my vet,and he said to give her another bath, but this time to add some vinegar to the bath water,he said that will help to neutralize the smell..seemed like it has helped.
Thanks for the replies...

If the odor is still lingering try this remedy,
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 qt. 3% hydrogen peroxide
1 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap
Mix together and wash dog. Rinse well.

I agree with the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide I worked for a vet for 2 years I had to use that all the time to bath dogs that got sprayed and it worked great every time but I usualy put a lil more peroxide to make it a lil bit stronger

LRB... I can testify to the wonders of tomatoe juice. I got blasted several years back, and that was the only thing I found that would get rid of that smell. Will have to try the other mix, at least try to remember it LOL.

Many Thanks for your replies guys !!
I didn't have any tomatoe juice handy, but I heard that catsup will also work. The only thing I had on hand was vinegar, so I used that, and it really seemed to help....

Put some of that epoxy you use on rods on your hands and when you smell the skunk smell on Ginger,,,smell your hands and you will not smell the skunk smell anymore.....

You know I am playing with you...

All Outdoors...that is exactly what we have used in the past. My german shorthair got blasted by one 2 years ago. 2 gallons of tomato juice didn't seem to do anything for it.

1/4 cup of baking soda
1 qt. 3% hydrogen peroxide
1 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap
Mix together and wash dog. Rinse well.

It bleached his brown hair out for a little while...looked like a surfer dude, but he didn't stink anymore.

If your shorthair is heavily ticked, I bet he did look funny. I got it off of Upland Birddog.com. Fortunately I've never had to use it. I've bird hunted w/ dogs for years, and have yet to run into a skunk, knock on wood. I've got one pointer that had a run-in with a porcupine a few yrs ago, that was bad enough. But we got the quills out quickly, and after a little breather, she was back at it. I worry about jumping wild hogs. Anybody ever run onto some with birddogs?

I've never run into any hogs while hunting with dogs, but our male has been in some "situations."

2 years ago in the span of about a month...he qwas sprayed by a skunk, then the week later, he caught a porcupine. Got the quills out immediately an he went right back to hunting. The year before, he went on a hard point in some scrub brush up by Matador. There was a newborn baby calf in the brush there and the mama wasn't too far behind. She chased us all the way to the cattle guard!!
Then, later that year, we jumped a covey of bobs, and a bobcat was trailing them. Dog chased him, but couldn't catch the cat...good thing. Even the shock collar wouldn't slow him down.
He has gone a few years of good hunting now and doesn't chase everything like he did his 1st 2 years of hunting.
