Anyone else a Jack O Conner fan? I just finished up his book "The Art Of Hunting Big Game In North America." Great reading.

Big fan of O'Conner. Read all his stuff in Outdoor life and have all of his books. He started me on the path to Winchester Mod 70's (Pre-64) and the .270. For an English perfesser' he had some unusual comments that were not exactly "by the book".

I'm a fan but I try to keep things in context. He was a fan of the 270 because, during his formative hunting years, the most reliable expanding bullet, was the 130 grain Western Cartidge load for it. Jack would acknowledge the usefulness of other cartridges but stayed in love with the 270.

O'Connor's still the best, even after all these years, and even if you dislike the .270. The OP should find and read The Rifle Book, Sheep and Sheep Hunting, and Game in the Desert Revisited. Wayne van Zwoll and John Barsness are very readable nowadays, and Larry Weishuhn can write a great story when he puts his mind to it. Craig Boddington has to be mentioned for his huge output, if nothing else. I'm currently reading Barsness' new book, The Big Book of Gun Gack, which can be purchased directly from John through his website, www.riflesandrecipes.com. He'll even sign it for you. The book is essentially a 21st Century update of Bob Hagel's classic, Handloading and Practical Ballistics for the American Hunter. But no one holds a candle to Jack for pure entertainment and readability.

O'Connor is wonderful to read. I've read all his stuff - most multiple times.
Yes, he was a huge fan of the .270. But the corollary that has become accepted as fact - that he disliked and/or talked down other calibers (most notably, the .30-06) is simply a myth. Like many in the 20s and 30s, he did much of his early hunting with a Springfield in .30-06. He was a realist - and he knew the basic ballistics of each caliber and the relative differences of each. Thus, he knew the mid-level calibers all performed within a relatively close range. And his writing reflected that.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I love O'Conner for his writings because they are rooted in experience and common sense.
he hunted a lot, and grew up in an era that was before high magnification variable scopes, Ballistic coefficencies, long range setups, etc.
he's the reason I became and stayed a .270 fan(although mine is a ruger not a Winchester) and his advice has never steered me wrong.
I'm also a fan of Jim Carmichael and Craig Boddington. they bring a certain gentlemanly aspect to the sport of hunting that has been lost with the advent of the "aww shucks" bubba army of T.V hunters we have today
David Petzel cracks me up with his witty responses.

Petzal is an opinionated sonofagun. He's "old school". I like him. He has a unique writing style. Outdoor writers in the past decade have become a lot less formal in their articles and field and stream is a front runner. Petersons hunting and mike schoby is another I enjoy

I cut my teeth reading Jack's books and articles. To me he had the most common sense of any outdoor writer, that I have read. Although he championed the 270, he often stated that the person behind the gun, was the most important part of the puzzle. Jack never talked down another caliber, unlike Carmichael. I remember him calling my precious 257 rob., "A HAS BEEN, THAT NEVER WAS". That was pretty much the end of my reading his books and articles.

NEGATIVE! Carmichael couldn't come close to O'conner. Read any of Jack's writings, and he never once wrote anything bad about any caliber. Carmichael was jealous of popularity of the 270, and also wrote negative things about several calibers, with no basis, just his personal feelings. I remember an atricle Jack wrote about sheep hunting, he said, " A good glass and hunters abililty is the two most important things in sheep hunting, hell I could hunt them with a 25-35 and be confident to bag a sheep.

Enjoy reading Jack's writings, but also enjoy reading Elmer, Charmichel, Skeeter, Ackley, Aagaard and many others.
These days Wayne van Zwoll and John Barsness provide some good material. Not a fan of the very prolific Boddington though.

Sheephunters' hunting "hero".
I have several.... no numerous 270 win. I recently purchased 2 - Jack O'connor's tribute 270 winchester rifles. I also have Jack's books... Read several times. Always have one on my nightstand. When I purchased the tribute 270's, Brad O'Connor was nice enough to signed 2 of my books which I display with the tribute rifles.
