If I were buying today, I would get the Sightmark and not look back. At $1000 you're looking at modern digital, Gen2 or used. Take your pick.

Or do what I did and buy two X-SIghts, for about that price....

So you can pay money for absolutely nothing, for 6 months. All the while ATN keeps saying "next month"... LOL

depending on what you want to do.....as of today (X-sight is not on the shelves for the public yet), thermal is the way to go to spot game. The cheapest thermal out (about $1600 reconditioned) is 1,000,000 better for finding game quickly than any night vision out right now. I don't see this changing for a while, but who knows.

I you don't believe me, rent some equipment from some of the guys on this forum. Go to a wheat field. Scan with your best night vision and count the number of deer on it. Then, use the cheapest thermal out there and do the same. First, you will find out that there are more deer than your night vision found. Second, it will take 10% of the time to find them. I have done this exercise many, many times.

Good point on the thermal for scouting. Bought the cheapest FLIR Scout for about what you guessed below, and it's worth it. Haven't had time to hog with it yet, and still waiting for my NV scopes, but it's been great at spotting critters around the homestead (yard deer, critters after my chicken coop, etc.). Very rapid and efficient way to scan for life...

Some anomalies in the way it reads certain critters though. The feathers in my chickens block much of the heat unless on very high settings, for example. Still, it works very well, once you get the hang of it. As mine pretty much the cheapest thermal made, my resolution isn't very good. But I can spot stuff in a flash, and plan to use other tools for ID and shooting.

I have the Photon XT and am very happy with it. Some of the others responding mention that a thermal device is really handy and they are quite right, but they do increase the cost. I've got a ps32 and it really is a great tool for spotting game. I follow up with the Photon, and it is a great combination. If I were starting out and could afford it, I would just go buy a Flir RS32 and be done with it. I have no problem identifying critters with my ps32 now that I have some experience with it. At first, you have to have something else in order to be sure. Now that the weather is colder, the Flir really works well. The x-sight is supposedly right around the corner from delivery, but we've been hearing that story for a good while. If I were making the choice right now, I would go with the Photon. It's known and has few issues as opposed to a likely very buggy x-sight.

For a night vision riflescope under 1k(and a lead time under 1 month)the photon with an external IR is your best. Pocket the extra $300, or buy nice scope rings or a DVR to record your hunts.
For a thermal handheld I would skip the $1,600 ps24 and go with a $2k pulsar HD19a. World of difference in those 2 units.
