Anyone know how to paint a stainless steel barrel? I just want the barrel and action matte black.

If you want to the best finish, it needs to be blasted and cerakoted.

If you want a DIY finish, you can use dura coat or even rattle cans. If it is a brushed stainless, there is probably enough tooth tooth that the finish will adhere. If its polished, nothing is going to stick well and you need to rough it up some.

As Colt mentioned it depends on how slick the steel is. Get some fine emory cloth and rough it up a bit, clean with acetone, don't let your dirty hands touch the steel, wear gloves, and apply a good metal primer. Give that a day to dry then go forward with whatever color you want. I've done this on multiple stainless barrels and have had good adherence for a very long time with fairly rough use.

The metal is duracoat, but I painted the stock with a rattle can. I really dig the texture, I am going to paint my 17HMR when I get some free time.

I bought an airbrush several years ago and sprayed duracoat on almost anything that would stand still. It isn't that hard and the results are more durable than rattle can.

I like that pattern that is on the knife and paintball gun. How did you do that? Stencil, painters tape, of free hand?

It's really easy to do.. It's called "Copperhead." There used to be a detailed tutorial in the refinishing forum over at afcom.

-Spray your first color, FDE
-Mask with blue painters tape. Tear the tape, don't cut. You want the rough edges.
-Spray second color, Brown
-Lightly trace or outline the edges of the painters tape with Black. Be careful not to overspray too much black over the brown. This is where a fine airbrush tip really shines.
-Peel the masking tape off
-Lightly "dust" the unmasked FDE with black to knock the contrast down a bit.
-Sit back and enjoy

I usually buy a shooter and go get several cans of flat krylon, some leaves, twigs, and johnson grass and start painting...of course, I have leaned one or two up against a tree and had to "find" them occasionally...LOL

My First task is to paint them...if I don't like the end result, I just start over without stripping them...for some reason, someone always comes along and tries to buy them off me...good scopes and home made camo...doesn't get any better IMO.

Well think I've envisioned my next project. Got the Punisher Skulls and MultiCam stencils ordered and on the way. need about 4 more colors to get the MultiCam paint right. Going to strip all the this paint off back to anodizing and put the skulls on, one on magwell and one on top of suppressor so that area stays black and then commence the MultiCam painting.

Stencils probably won't be in until next Monday, but I'm hoping they will be delivered with the Saturday mail. Soo I'll probably strip it all down back to black this weekend and get everything prepped for paint for when it all comes in.

Lots of stenciling with multicam. I love the pattern but just don't have the stones to try it. What coating type are you going with? My biggest hangup with rattle can paint is that a lot of cleaning agents will destroy it. The time your going to invest in a multi-cam job will be worth spending the money on duracoat or cerakoat. Just my .02.

It will be rattle can, but will have several coats of matte clear should hold up pretty good for a while atleast. Shouldn't be to hard to touch up either, just mask and reapray in places that need it.

Haha that's one of the biggest reasons all the plastics is staying black so if I don't like it I'll just give it all an acetone bath and strip it off. That and I kind of like it broken up a little bit not completely sprayed down. Would be a lot easier to just spray the whole thing, but I don't mind breaking it all down and putting it back together again.

Also can't bring myself to spray that $650 optic/mount combo either lol.

Well started on Saturday and finally done. Just needs to completely cure before I put all the stuff back on it. I think it matches the multicam pretty dang good. Yes there are a few spots that the stencils didn't keep the paint out of, but I'll be using the hell out of the gun and will get many more scratches and paint taken off of it so I'm not too worried about it. Think it turned out pretty good for my first try at it. Let me know what you think.

Thanks, I was really iffy on it. When it was still hanging in the garage I didn't know if I liked it or not. Was very bright, but after 3 coats of matte clear it dulled down a bit and started looking more like multicam. Once I put it on a mulitcam background it started to blend even better. Only color that doesn't look to match is the "white" which I couldn't find the correct paint so I went with matte almond and its a bit more white than what is in the multicam pattern but I'm sure with some use it will dull down too.
