Does anyone use dogs as decoys to bring yotes in close. I have been looking at this technique for a while and am curious to how you go about training a dog to do this. What breed of dogs are successful at this type of hunting? How long does it usually take to train a dog for this? Can you hunt successfully year round with a dog or will you be more successful during certain seasons?

http://youtu.be/4LylBR-qeh8http://youtu.be/34L4F7HAgZgThis is Scott Hampton , nice guy... U can find him on Facebook and he would probably answer your questions . He was going to go for a week with the guy from Relentless Pursuit this week but something came up. Looks like he's got it down ! He said it doesn't really work in the fall....

Few names to look under on YouTube
Scott Hampton- I've hunted with Scott and he's a good guy with some awesome decoy dogs Jeff Writer John Glynn Kelly Jackson
Decoy dogs are mainly used in the summer months when coyotes are protective of their dens. Your not going to get many aggressive coyotes after late Sept. Your going to need to put a dog on 150-200 coyotes a yr for a couple yrs to get a great one. Most great decoy dogs aren't for sale. It takes too much time in effort to train one then sell it. Most dockyard dogs have some black mouth cur in them some where down the line.

This question is one that I have pondered ever since watching dogging on television...seemed to me those dogs were larger than a coyote and didn't really care if the coyote was there or not. They would mostly just stare down the yote so the shooter got a nice standing shot, at whatever distance they encountered the coyote. It did seem as though the dogs just canvased the territory and eventually made it back to the owner. Now, those were my observations and may or may not have any basis in fact. I considered what type of dog is aloof enough (yet not aggressive) to just stand and face a coyote without reacting much. Couldn't come up with a good answer. Then the issue of seasonality of dogging came up, so there was another factor to consider. So then I wondered if you could train a pig to do the same thing on a year round basis (seriously.) Then I wondered aloud if a rooster or a goat might be trained for such an endevor (we ALL had a good laugh over that thought.) Then I decided that a female in heat would be a suitable choice (any time of year). Moreover, your neighbors yappy type dog that is rabbit sized, scared of its shadow, with short legs would probably provide the best standing shot opportunity... All kidding aside, it would seem a difficult task to find the right dog(s) for the job and an even harder task to allow them to train themselves. If you figure it out let me know.

The guys that I mentioned above all use dogs in the 30lb range. The don't want big togs that will scare iff the coyote.

Do a You Tube search for "decoy dog for coyotes", plenty of them on You Tube. Some are informative, some are more self promotion than information, but both types will give you information to proceed farther.
