I was just notified this morning that my 10 yr old daughter was drawn for either sex at Pat Mayse WMA, the problem is that she was drawn for Gus Engeling WMA the same weekend for Antlerless/Spike. I'm looking for a little honest feedback from folks that have hunted these areas, which one is she most likely to get her first deer?

I'm inclined to go to Pat Mayse since it is either sex, but really, I just want her to have the best chance at a shot opportunuty. What say you?

My son won the antlerless hunt at GE for next weekend (25th). This will be his second time there. He killed a 3 point there last year and my daughter killed her first deer there the only time she's ever been. So, it's been good to us. I've taken several deer there over the years and have never gone without at least having shot opportunities.

That being said, it's not an easy hunt. There's a reason the success rate is so low there. GE is literally crawling with squirrel hunters on every day a deer hunt is not being held. These deer are educated to the extreme, and if you're careless with the wind or noise, they'll school you.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Don't know anything aboutPat Mays . Good luck.

if you download the catalogue, if gives the success rates for each hunt. You could choose the one with higher success.

Everything he just said is true. There are a lot of deer but it is heavily hunted, the deer are very educated. Probably not the best place to be introduced to deer hunting. I think a kid might get very bored and frustrated.
There are a lot of adults who get drawn out there and never see a single deer.

Thanks guys, I talked it over with my daughter and she decided she'd rather have a chance at a buck than bait for does/spikes. Looks like we'll be at Pat Mayse on Saturday! Any other THF'rs with kids going out for the same hunt?

Pat Mayse was 20% success last year and Gus Engling was 14% so she chose the higher success one also. Good luck, take pictures.
