I'm looking for a good, affordable chronograph. Has anyone used any of the Shooting Chrony brand chronographs? Or any others for around the same price?

I'm very happy with my ProChrono. I've never had any problems with it, so I've never needed to try any others. The Oehler 35P seems to be the class of the field, but there's the $$$. The Magnetospeed also looks very slick and better for many applications than the ProChrono, Chrony, etc., but, again, $$$.

+1 on the ProChrono. Gunwriter John Barsness uses and recommends it too. It's a Best Buy at around a hundred bucks. Now, if you can afford an Oehler, well, then you'll have the best!

Magneto gives the most accurate numbers. But I don't want it on the end of my barrel changing harmonics during load development. I have a Shooting Chrony and have no complaints. I also like to check velocities later on with a friend's Magneto Speed.

This one works well, I have not used the unit indoors with the supplied lights. Plug into Smartphone or IPad. Control, save data, edit, print or email info. Includes muzzle energy and power factor if you input bullet or bullet weight. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/628006/...=ProductFinding

What are some advantages and disadvantages of the ProChrono and the Shooting Chrony?

There is a complete chapter in Brian Litz new book devoted to chronograph testing and evaluation. I haven't reached that chapter yet but a lot of people are claiming it to be the best part of the book.

I run a CED M2, and recommend it. It is a very good chronograph for the money.

Oehler 35P is hard to beat but it isn't cheap...you get what you pay for is my motto. Also, no way I'm straping anything to my barrel to develop a load with only to remove it later with expectations that it will shoot the same.

I don't know a great deal about chronographs, but my Oehler 35P has been working flawlessly for 25 years.

CED M2 is a great buy. And the head unit is separate from the screens, so you are not shooting at/toward your chronograph.

The ProChrono is a good cheap option and I preferred it to the Chrony of any model due to it's superior screens. The 35/35P is good stuff but you need a trailer to get it to the range. Had one. Hated dragging it out and setting it up. I now use a MagnetoV2 and like it for the ease of set up and no worry of shooting a hole in it. I don't develop loads with it attached but I do check speed once I find an accuracy node to determine if The speed is adequate or if I want to chase the next node.

I got the ProChrono Digital yesterday and took it shooting today. I shot 3 groups of 5 and it didn't pick up a single shot. I shot everywhere from about 3 inches above the censor to close to the top of the light screen and got nothing. It was turned on and it just had a zero on the screen the whole time. Any ideas why it won't work?

You might have gotten a dead unit. In strange light you might miss a reading for a single shot, but 15 in a row just doesn't happen. I'd call tech support asap.

Any ideas why it won't work? What time of the day did you shoot? If you were shooting when the sun is high in the sky, the sun can easily interfere with the reading. Also, if it's too close to the muzzle, it can get muzzle flash and cause errors. Set it at least 12 feet away. I have tried and played with almost all of the chrono's. You get what you pay for with them. The cheaper one's are the most sensitive to the light and light angles. You will often have reading and error issues with a $100 chronograph.

I picked up a Shooting Chrony with the remote display. It was easy to get working the first time. It even gave me some bad news on my pet 308 load, ES was good, but velocity was real low on my 20" barrel.
On the plus side, even at 2400 fps, 150gr Speer Spitzers seem to kill medium game just fine out to 200y. Also shoots real soft.
