I was amazed not only at the amount of animals he took but the vast species. People rant about Fred Bear's hunting abilities, not to take anything away from Ole Freddie, he was one bad cat too..But Howard is the legend!

Very cool. Some of the shots Hill, Bear, Pope and Young made were incredible but when you read their exploits some of the shots they took would be considered unethical by today's standards. You've obviously been in the stick and string game a long time so I would guess you have read about Ishi and his teaching Pope and Young. He taught them more about hunting in the long run IMHO. I thought it was pretty interesting the way Ishi held his bow and rested his arrows especially when Pope and Young went back to the style we used today which is more comparable to long bowmen of yesteryear. Thanks for the link.

The old guys did things different. Can you imagine a hunting show today where arrows are launched in "volleys" as Pope and Young often described in some of their hunts? Read the "Witchery of Archery" and you'll be amazed at some of the distances and amounts of arrows shot by those brothers.

The old guys certainly did things different. Thank God for them they paved the road we all enjoy today. I'm sure they would freak out seeing what we do today, we hunt with wheels on our bows with sights and scopes, feeders, game cameras, far out camo, attractants and the list goes one.
I've seen a major change since I've started in archery in 1965, the advent of the compound bow, and it's evolving daily to more and more gadgets. Bowtech came out with the Black Knight around 2002 with speeds over 300 FPS, that was unheard of. I shot a Pro 40 Dully with speed knocks and I had John at Bucknasty strings make me some extra fat strings and cables to get my bow under 288 FPS so I could compete. Then Bowtech gave all the staff shooters 50 pound limbs to be compliant. Now 300 FPS is slow.

Yes Bubba old timers did things differently; that's the reason I got rid off all my compounds this year. Going to dance with the one that brung me.
