Find an archery shop around town and tell them your budget and they'll let you shoot a couple and see which one you like.

Buy on here or craigslist, lots of rich guys by the newest models each year. Just make sure you keep there contact info if bow breaks (for a mathews anyways). That's how I got my last two bows, both work like new and if they ever break I made it part of the deal I can contact the seller to send it in for me.

Why is it that every time I push #1 for english, I cannot understand the person on the other end???

Yep. Best bow I have owned. Bought a lightly used Insanity thinking I would upgrade, and I can't find it any better.

Some good advice so far, good used ones or entry level new.

If going new, or even to try some go somewhere they will let you shoot several. Cabela's has several on sale or with Cabela's bucks back that can be used for arrows, release etc. If you go there have them setup a few Infinite Edge, Instigator, Vision, and Rally come to mind and some of those are on sale now.

I would say run as fast as you can from big box stores... Find yourself a reputable shop and get to know the pro so they can teach you and you can work out what your needs are

Find a used Elite. They have a transferable lifetime warranty. So does Athens.

You may want to look at Mission Archery....these bows are built by Mathews and have a large poundage and draw length adjustment. My Archery shop owner (who sells Mathews) swears by them.

+1

Mission makes a great bow. My dad shoots a Mission Ballistic and it shoots as good or better than my Hoyt CRX32

Hoyt Charger. I'm not sure what the bare bow runs but it should be close to that.

I think you can get a Mission bow for under $500. I'd check your local bow shops or go online and look for a Mission Archery Dealer.

Mission Bows are really good IMO. I shoot one, love it, and haven't had a problem/any problems since bought in late 2009

This seems like a pretty sweet bow, and a heck of a deal for the price.

How about the Quest Rogue or Torrent? I'm not recommending, I'm interested in getting into bow hunting in the same price range. These have been recommended by multiple people.

As others have said, I would look at newer model used bows. You can get a much better bow for your money. Athens has a transferable lifetime warranty, so they are definitely worth a look. A buddy of mine is on their field staff and he has had several Athens bows. From what I've seen they are very nice bows.
