So, the OTC tags go on sale in a little over 2&1/2 weeks, August 5. I think the elk tags are unlimited, but the bear tags have "caps", so it's first-come, first-served basis. Plus, I'm pretty OCD about doing things as early as possible.
I know we talked about this way back when this thread started, but I can't remember what everyone said. As far as I can tell, by looking over the CO booklet, there's no deer (of either type) licenses available in our area and there are no either sex or cow elk tags available in our area. That just leaves a bull tag ($601.00) and possibly a bear tag ($351.00), plus your 10.00 habitat stamp.
Sneaky, et al - please correct me if I've misread something.
Who all is getting a bear tag? And is there any reason to get a fishing license, or small game tag?
Sorry if this is plowing the same ground. Drinking causes memory problems, and even worse, causes memory problems. Deer tags are draw only. No cow tags for that unit. Bull tags are unlimited. Bear tags are first come, first serve, and I believe you are required to have the elk tag to get the bear tag. I'm shooting for the bear tag, if I can get through in time. May need to put in a request for those draw only tags...

Especially now that we're in the "dog days" of summer. All I think about is cool mountain air. Oh yeah. Can't wait.

Just ordered my Sagen II saw. Pitchfork Predator's list on the backpack essentials thread reminded me that all I have is the deer-size Sagen, a Wyoming saw, and a couple of light-weight saws, and I hate to go waling on a bull's ribcage and pelvis with a hatchet. 1. Bored 2. Ready to go hunting. 3. Yeah, I'm also trying to get my post count up.

Looking at his list again --- what is our policy/plan regarding comms? (Walkie, radio) I know the mountains play hell with any radio signal. I could bring bugles and teach y'all...never mind.

CR, I think Sneaky will have a class the 1st day on hnd signal, if he knows more than the "one finger lift" Radios are always good, take up little room and don't weigh much. Plus, if anyone in 5 miles shoots at a bull, the radio will get busy. They will also monitor it for DA to give a way a honey hole, so you should watch what info you put out over the airwaves, unless you want company.

I don't plan on brining radios. I figure we'll pair up and everyone can meet up in camp at night. I'm open to suggestions, though.

I think with the terrain we'd need some higher end radios, and I'm trying to keep this a budget trip. At least that's what I keep telling my wife.

We have done OK with the $100 set motorolas, even if hunting in pairs, you likely wont be to0 far from each other. Allot better than yelling "Elk are over here!!" Using phones and texting is fine (if you have a signal), but I would rather save the battery on the phone, if you need help. We usually check-in on the hr. Radio you can leave on, just keep allot of batteries at camp. Avoid radios that have the "call", or key up feature, unless it can be muted.

What's the latest on the roll call? How many do we have committed? Sneaky, Creekrunner (me), Shawheel (you), Pitchfork Predator, Erath Kid, MACV, and mow (as a maybe) are who responded to the last "Who's in?" query.

I'm working my way through the thread and putting together a list of who is driving and what gear we all made crazy promises to bring. Will post in a bit.
For those who are planning on driving, can you post the days you're planning on heading up and coming back down?

'Sorry I forgot North2ak.
I like to take my time and not push it so I'm leaving 10/15 am and overnighting in Clovis, then either Durango or Dolores on the 16th. Headed to find a campsite early on the 17th for you road warriors to have a nice place to land. Let me know if I need to move this up a day earlier.
I think we talked about hunting through the 23rd? Correct me if I'm wrong. I'll probably head home when everyone else does, unless someone else and I are playing hide-n-seek with some monster bull, or bulls. Season ends the 26th.
