My eyes, hands, a bipod, and a rear bag.

I've had to re-boresight many a scope that gadgets were used on and they wouldn't hit paper.

Yup,
I have paid many gun ranges $5 to bore sight a gun that couldn't find paper at 50 yards.
I do better looking down the bore of a bolt action or just starting close with anything else.

I paid one time, now I look down the bore also. On paper at 50 yds first shot.

I have an old Bushnell with mandrels. It's general vicinity at best.

No need to bore site! Mount the scope using level levels, torque to spec, shoot at 25 yds and adjust as necessary (typically 2 - 3" low depending on caliber). Depending on the the rifle will be close enough to adjust (check trajectory tables) and then move to 100yds, simple, easy and cheap! As stated above, save your money on gadgets.

Shoot one shot at 25 yards. Locate the point of impact. Then aim at orignal aiming point. While holding that position move the crosshairs to the bullet hole. One more shot at 25 yards. Correct as necessary. Move to 50 yards and do the same thing. Then move to 100. You should be very close to dead on. Depending on caliber you may be slightly low. I have sighted in with 4 to 5 rounds using this method.

Just eyeball down thru the bore at 25 yds from a rest. Use a 1-2" red dot to aim at. Shoot at 25, 50 then move to 100 and dial it in. Could do it in less than 10 rds. Simple, cheap and works every time.

Eyeballin' through the bore is how I do it. One shot at 50 then move to 100.
3-4 shots is typically what it takes to get zero'd at 100. I've been lucky and done it in two shots….once.

I do the eye ball thing on bolt guns. AR guns no deal. But use the method of shooting at 25 first and go from there is usually a 3 to 4 round sight in. I have seen the ones that are a casing that fits in the chamber and shoots the light beam out of the barrel but have never wasted the money on one to see if it works.

There are not many weeks that go by that I don't have to sight-in a gun. I do the traditional look down the barrel on bolt guns but I start a 100 yards even for bore-sighting. AR's /Lever guns of course are different but what I have found is easiest and wastes the least time and ammo is simply use a big enough target you cannot miss at 100. I normally use 3ft wide roll paper and roll out 4 ft tall sheet and staple it up with a dot in the middle. Rarely do I miss the whole target but if it does happen I shoot a spot on the berm and watch the impact and that allows me to dial close enough to get on paper. Then I shoot one shot dial to that POI and I am very close then. Average sight-in is 3 shots if I am lucky only 2 and rarely more than 4.
Tip of the day. Target not big enough.... one advantage of living in the biggest state in the lower 48 is BIG state maps they work great in a pinch and I always have one in my vehicle.
