DING DING! Let the fight begin.
I'll be buying one or the other soon, as a little Merry Christmas gift to myself. What is your preferred choice and why? I'm leaning towards the Extrema 2 at this point, but not nothing is even close to being decided yet...

Both a great guns! Can't go wrong with either. I chose the SBE II due to less gun maintenance, lighter weight and ease of breaking down to clean; less moving parts. Hope that helps!

I got an SBE II for the same reasons heat says, but I would reccomend you check them both out and get the one you like most.

although I shot TexasEd's Extrema when he first got it, and that is a sweet gun also...might have to get one of those also just to cover all my bases

You are talking about 2 completely different guns. Both are the best of their own world.
If you want inertia, go SBE II.
If you want gas, go Xtrema II.
Figure out which one suits you best and pull the proverbial trigger.

I have the SBE, the SBE2, ane the Extrema 2. All I can suggest is go with the one that fits the best. The only problem that I have ever had was with the SBE. We were hunting in pretty bad ice and it was in the teens. The moisture, from condensation I guess, caused the firing pin to freeze. All around, I love all three.
 Dozer, mulched, and trackhoe work. Fencelines, senderos, tanks. Let me know if I can help with any dirtwork or construction.

I love my Xtrema 2. Very little recoil. Tried my buddies SBE2 and the fit was very good but the recoil was much greater, using the same ammo. Clean up is not that bad.

The SBE comes apart in 3 pieces, it can be cleaned and put back together in 5 minutes. My brother bumped our blind last year and mine fell in the water. I disassembled the gun with my headlamp on, cleaned the mud out of the barrel, put it back together and shot a limit while the gun had water all inside the action. I have a Beretta o/u and I am a huge Beretta fan, but as far as a duck hunting gun, the Benelli is #1 in my book.

did the same with my S2K, finished with a limit, without taking it apart to clean, just made sure the barrel was clear

That sums a lot of it up for me as well.
For me it really came down to feel...I threw both up on my shoulder and the SBEII just felt sooo good. The Extrema felt top heavy to me. Obviously feel has nothing to do with performance and is totally subjective but I think it is one of the most important things when you get down to it.

I bought the SBEII a couple month ago and I love it. Just felt better to me. I'm a smaller guy, and its a lighter gun -- easier for me to lift and swing. The X2 is pretty sweet, as well. Maybe next time...

I have the original extrema. All I can say is it is soft shooting, so it allows you to get back on target quicker. The extrema will also shoot 2 3/4 7/8 oz skeet loads with no problems what so ever. I have seen post where the SBE II will occasionally jamb on skeet loads. Maintenance is not an issue with the extrema. I normally clean my gun twice per season unless I drop it in the water. Cleaning is very easy to do and could be done in the field.  Jughead

You won't find many 3.5" guns that will shoot light and soft loads like a 7/8oz 1200fps load. However I shoot some 7/8oz lighting steel reloads that are 1600fps and my SBE cycles them without any problems.
I shoot the 1 1/8oz 1255fps or 1oz 1300fps dove loads all day long with it as well without problems. So if you want to shoot light loads a 3.5" gun isnt for you...but no shotgun is going to be perfect for every situation and you want see any active skeet, trap, etc shooters using duck guns.

I have shot both and like them both, but I already had an inertia gun and love my Xtrema2.
My shoulder loves it too.
I don't think it is too much harder to clean than an inertia gun and it can go a long time between cleanings. It also has an anti-corrosion coating on it for coastal hunting.

How many rounds does the Xtrema hold? Benelli only holds 4 with plug out... Not that it's a huge deal, but if you were planning on doing a lot of goose hunting (might be a reason you were looking at the 3.5" capability in the first place) and you wanted to get in on some of that late season action where you could pull the plugs... it might sway your opinion. Of course... I guess if you can afford $1500+ for the gun, you can also afford to purchase the extended mag and load up 10 or 12 rounds. Nevermind.

my vote would be for the extreme 2 because of the kickoff and the anti corrosion finish. but make sure and shoot one before you buy it, i was all set to by the extreme but luckily my friend got one first- it just didnt fit me right. i am sure that if i bought one from the beretta gallery they would shim the stock and every thing to make it fit, but not if you just go into bass pro or cabelas.

Recently, I was faced with the same decision and settled for Xtrema2 but after taking it to a duck hunt, for some reason it didn't felt as good as my Beretta 390, so I returned it and got SBE II. I'm very happy about the decision (even though I had to pay restocking fees etc). SBE II fits me really well and is a pleasure to shoot.

Extrema 2, that two piece action is a PIA on the SBEs, if you just want a recoil action look at the Franchi or the Retay and save some bucks

I'm thinking about selling my berretta A400 12g and trying a 20g sbe2. Or maybe send off my older 12g sbe2 and see if someone can get it to shoot duck loads. But really wanting a 20g sbe2, those Benelli's ergonomics are second to no one.
