I've been using a Glock for the last eight years, and I just got my M&P Shield a few months back with the safety. To me it's not an issue. Maybe it's just me, but if you practice with your weapon that you will carry it becomes a none issue! Just like with a Glock, you don't worry about the lack of a safety, and just learn to keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to fire.
If you don't practice, and aren't familiar with your weapon, then any pistol you carry will give you problems.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I actually like the safety on the shield. It's a great design that in my experience isn't easily engaged. I carry safety off, but I like having the option. When I'm shooting for fun at the range or farm, I practice over the top gun safety (have an accidental discharge will do that to you). Me and my wife share guns when we shoot, and I prefer for a gun that is loaded and ready to be fired to be on safety when it changes hands. Just personal preference, and not everybody is like that, but I'll never be upset the a gun has an external safety.

JMO YMMV

Haven't had a problem with the safety on mine so far. Nice that they are going to offer it without for those that want it that way.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

The safety is a preference. Glock has been making pistol without a thumb safety sense back in the early '80's. My wife has a M&Pc 9mm without the safety. My Shield has a thumb safety. I personally would rather it didn't. That is just me. Some prefer a thumb safety, nothing wrong with that.

I prefer a thumb safety, but always aware than any mechanical device can fail. Safety safety safety first.

Keep yer finger outside of the trigger guard until you are 110% sure.

if the safety lever was the same size as the rest of the M&Ps then maybe, I'm just not a fan of thumb safetys in general and the shield safety was way too small for my hands/fingers
