Just came in today. Criterion, 26", stainless, 1 in 9" twist, varmint contour, 7mm08. Lets see where this goes, and yes, a Savage.

Looking at one of these, something stable with bi-pod that won't twist but not too heavy. Any body have one of these? They are both Choate models, Ultimate Varmint and Target/Sniper model. Good or bad info? Will be mainly a bench gun.

Just bed the action/stock, and it should be fine. If the forend flexes with a bipod, then it can cause some flier issues.

I had one of the top ones, believe its the sniper model. Anyway it was very very heavy. I had it on a 20" 308 savage model. I got it all in a trade, but didn't keep it very long.

Just bed the action/stock, and it should be fine. If the forend flexes with a bipod, then it can cause some flier issues. That was my concern as the forend flexes with bi-pod to create inconsistent groups.

Correct. This is why I do not use a bipod on hunting guns. The stock flexes, and causes weird groups and fliers. The Hogue stocks are some of the big problem one's. A good laminated wood stock, like a Boyd's, would be great once it's bedded. The laminate is very solid.

If that is the case I may just use the one I have on my 300 Win Mag for barrel breakin and load testing to see how it does.

http://mannersstocks.comThey called me today telling me that my next one is in the milling room.  I have a T-4, and am having another T-4 being built. Great stocks, great customer service, major support of the shooting sports. Both my T-4's will have been purchased at $250 off. Both times I sent a gift certificate I won from a prize table at a rifle matches. Put a bipod on it, rest the forearm on anything you want, sling up with it, and it'll still shoot the same. It will continue this in 20F to 105F. Pricey, yes, but quality costs money.

If a cheap factory stock has problems with bedding and stock flexing, a stock upgrade is a necessity. Sure, it costs more, but is it expensive to have a good shooting rifle shoot consistently each and every time? How many times have you wondered "why did that bullet hit there?" I think of it as a part of getting rifles to shoot well. I guess it depends on what "expansive" means to you.

If you are building a precision rifle, there's no reason to skimp on the stock. Should have stuck a smiley on it or something.

Here it is with the new Choate Varmint stock, pretty heavy but it will work for barrel break in or until I figure out what stock I really want. Got my eye on a scope but waiting for income tax return.  [/URL][/img]

Looks good so far. I also use Manners stock, there is no better business to buy from. Not only is their customer service top notch but they support the shooting community like fireman said. I have used the T4a but now use the T2a and like it much more.

On your way. The vertical grip allows better trigger control and no one will convince me otherwise.
Bipod on the forearm, sandbag the rear of the stock, run two dollar bills (layered) down the barrel channel and make sure the barrel is still free-floated. Also make notes on 100 yard paper, shot to shot, 1 through 5. If it starts to string it may be contacting the stock. I bet everything will be fine, but I'd check these things to be sure.

Because it's an upgraded stock to an action, and not a factory stock fitted to a factory action at the factory by the manufacture. I've seen numerous customers upgrade to an after market stock, and it not fit the action. Most stock makers make their stocks with a little extra room to allow for tolerances from action to action. This extra room requires bedding to tighten things up.
Your situation you are referring to was that a factory rifle wouldn't or couldn't shoot well unbedded. Which is far from the truth.

Guess again the inlet for the aftermarket would be akin to any manufacturers stock. Who do you think makes Winchester EW stocks? B&C. If someone buys the aftermarket from B&C they should bed it but not if purchased from Winchester don't bed it. You surely don't have a clue what you are talking about. Get up to speed before you pop off and post drivel or flat out bs.
