What powders should i look at?

Nosler has
Varget and RL15 keep popping up but these have been hard to find...

Barnes has
RL22 and Retumbo popping up....

Why are they so different on powders for similar grain bullets?

What bullet weight are you planning on shooting?

For the typical 7mm-08 powders, look at powders in the burn rate area of Varget and R15, up to H4350. Any of those burn rate powders will work well for the heavy bullets (162 A-max). Print out the chart, and see who carries certain powders at your places you buy from so you know if it will work or not. Generally, the heavier the bullet, the slower the burning powder you would want to use. The lighter the bullet, the faster burning powder you want. I know several shooters who run Varget with a 162 A-max, and a few more that run H4350. So, anywhere in there will work, even a little faster burning for the lighter bullets (like 4064, 4895, 8208, etc).

I don't know why Retumbo would be an option for the 7mm-08. That's WAY too slow burning.

Yeah so retumbo is not on the list... I accidentally hit 7mm rem mag instead of 7mm-08 frown

I am thinking about a bullet in the 140 range. I am leaning towards the partion right now as I like the way nosher presents there reloading data.

I have some target for 308 so will try that and maybe 1-2 others to find a good load.

Also, if you look below at the Hodgdon reloading data, you can get a good idea of what powders will work well for certain bullet weights. You can see these and compare them to other powder mfg burn rates to make it work.

I am new at this but here is what I found.

Savage/Stevens Model 110, ER Shaw 22" sporter barrel, 1 in 11" twist, 3 x 9 x 50 Prostaff scope

Remington Brass, Remington Primers, IMR 4064 powder, Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Hunting Tip bullets seated .030 in front of ring lands.
Started with 38 grains of powder with intervals to 43 grains.

Worst group at 1.5625 at 40 grains c to c, best group of .25 c to c at 42 grains.

I'm loading 40 gr of Varget and 140 gr Nosler Accubonds in mine, they have been deadly on everything my kids have shot.

For your desired combo, I would go with Varget, Re-15, or IMR4320....whichever powder you can find first. Lacking these, one of the 4350s or H414(WW760) would be OK on the slow end, or IMR4064/4895 would be OK on the fast end.

Use Varget under 120NBT for 2950. Good accurate load for my Ruger.

Varget has always been my go to in 7mm-08 with 140 grain bullets but due to the shortage and availablility and getting 5 lbs of Big Game in a trade, It has produced the best groups in both my 7-08 and 30/06 ,Both rifles I have had for quiet some time

IMR 4895 works well in .243 and .308 so should fit 7-08 also.

So I found a few lbs of 380 today at bass pro. Interestingly nosler only has it at the 150 grain. My Lyman manual is full of loads for differing grains but with different bullets.

Interesting

For my two 7-08s, here are my preferences for powder (among those I've tried):
1. Varget/H4895 (tie). Both work great for 140 and 150 gr bullets
3. H4350. Works fine with 140s, but not so great with 150s in my guns
4. RL-15. Good accuracy with 120s, but velocity was less than published
data suggested.

Good luck!
