At the Uvalde ranch yesterday. Way earlier than I've ever seen them. Maybe I just pay more attention now?

WOW! I haven't been out since the end of season.

I bet there is a rare hatch out of the ordinary, but it does seem way too early. I did not really know and this was what I found for south texas after a quick search. Could have been someone done for the season that released their pen raised birds too.

Activities: Pairs begin to establish breeding territories during February-April; nest construction
can begin as early as March; a majority of hatches are completed by July; hatches as late as
November have been recorded when a “wet” fall follows an exceptionally “dry” spring and
summer

It's strange that we've had the tenth coldest winter in history and this would happen.

Agreed Bill. I was hunting in the deep coastal bend of South Texas on the 3rd weekend of February and we pointed at least 3 covies of birds not more than 8-9 weeks old. That would be a December hatch. It was really strange to the point that we would not shoot them.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

At least the third I would guess?

A quail hatches in late November and early December have been well documented in south Texas. A December hatch makes a lot of sense.
Last Nov. and Dec. 2013 was damp and green with lots of insects still out (no frost yet) for chicks to eat. So a late Nov. or Dec. 2013 hatch should solve the early hatch mystery.
This is a good sign, this will put more healthy hens on the ground this summer for a big hatch if we continue to get good rains this spring and summer.
Thanks for all the reports.
