I leased a ranch west of there few years ago, had some good deer. Just didn't see the potential for what I was looking for.

Have a lease south near Whon. Been there for 12 years...nothing huge but it seems to get better every year. Lots of hogs, dove, and turkey with the occasional 130" to 135".

what is the deer population like? Should I expect to see deer on every hunt or could I go several hunts without seeing any deer?

We have 340 acres in Voss. The deer population is pretty light. The deer quality is there. Just depends on the property/area as to whether or not the antler size is decent. The body size is great! The deer are big and are great for some meat. I've always hunted in San Saba where the deer were small but there were billions of them. Lol. If you're familiar with the two areas I'll give my comparison. In San Saba I was seeing anywhere from 10-50 deer in one 2-4 hour sit. In Voss I've seen 0-10 in a 2-4 hour sit. Now we have only been in Voss for 1 year. San Saba had been developed by us for 15 years. So that plays into the numbers some too. Just my 2cents

Hunted a mile or so behind the S A High School years ago. The big dry draw on Hwy 67 at the east edge of town ran right thru the east side of our 1000 acre lease. The lease had some plowed ag ground on the west side, an active pump jack 300 yards off the west side County Road in middle of the lease ...and the rest of the lease was lots of up and down swales and broken ground covered in dense mesquite and occasional live oak thickets.

We killed some decent deer and turkey's in there...and lots of rattlesnakes, including the had been 6'er on my wall that weighed almost 22 lbs on a C Store's meat scale in Abilene that nite, that was missing the last 6/8"s of his back of my hand sized head and neck I left in the bush. I shot him one afternoon while exploring the lease just about dark on the bank of that Dry Wash when I lost track of the time...and overstayed my Welcome.

Long Story & I'll never do that again the way it happened...left 1 bullet in the pistol for myself as I carried him out in the dark without a flashlight thru a 1/4+ mile of mesquite brush...and him rattling the whole way wrapped around my upper arm...and getting answers on the ground all around me.

We killed rattlesnakes everywhere any time the sun was shining 12 months a year, including some others bigger than mine that got cut in half or more, but mostly late summer & during dove season. A shotgun doen't make for a good snake trophy collecting tool. Almost got bit in the camp area close to the pumpjack, picking up a piece of plywood I'd laid down 30/45 minutes earlier, while working on a new stand with 10-12 guys wandering around closeby less than 10-20 feet away.

Santa Anna used to be real good, kinda got shot out a few years back and I don't think it still has recovered or going to be the same, JMO.

The area I am looking at is literally just outside of town on the east side.

We bought a place about 5 miles SE of town last Oct. We only have 1 feeder going ,because we were on a lease last season. We saw deer ,hogs , turkey & all kind of varmints etc on the game cam. Like we said, we may not have a lot of anything, but we have a little of everything! LOL! We saw a Couple of real nice mature bucks during the rut. As far as we can tell the deer population isn't real high ,but we didn't have everything up & running yet. In the process of getting our feeders & everything set up now. We saw deer every time we sat in the blind, but sometimes only 1 or 2. Can be Great dove hunting,we had several limit shoots. The rockin R5 restaurant & H&H café are both good places to eat.

I leased a place in Santa Anna 2 years ago. Had some decent bucks on camera until mid October then the pigs completely took the place over. We shot them, trapped them, didn't make a dent. Worse I have ever seen on a place. I found two dens on the place. Took 11 snakes out of one, and 16 from the other. Lots of turkey. By the way, make sure you go to the Santa Anna grocery store to buy your steaks and a case of hamburger patties. They are the bomb!! Best of luck

Definitely will have snakes, deer are okay, and most likely you will have a plenty of hogs.

You will have lots of hogs, turkeys, and fewer deer, but still a huntable number.
