For the 223 I like bullets in the 60-69 grain range. Some very good bullets in this range like the 60 gr Nosler partition, 65 gr Serria game king, 64gr winchester. Nosler has a new 6? gr bonded bullet out that should work nicely also. As for powders there is a lot to choose from and most work just fine, I'm partial to Varget myself. Good luck and whack some pigs!

Any factory ammo will kill a hog with proper shot placement. Follow the recipes in the bullet manufacturers loading manual and you will be fine. Again, proper shot placement is key. Hogs are not bullet proof but you can't shoot them in the butt and expect them to drop like a stone.

If you can get your rifle to shoot Barnes you may try some of theirs. It won't blow up on contact unless you get a Varmit Projectile. Make sure your rifle is very clean before working up your loads. I used the 55 gr TSX for yrs cull shooting deer at up to 40 or more a yr and only recovered one projectile.

Personally I don't like the 223 for hogs, but for the price I'd try tye sierra's.

My AR likes the 60-grain Partition pushed by 25.2 grains of H4895.

My AR's like the 55gr VMAX bullets over TAC powder. Like posters have stated above the bullet placement is key. We have not had any hogs take a step after shooting them (all within 100 yards)when using that bullet combo. Bigger is always better but those VMAX's are effective.

Listen to RickyK and Bloodtrail. That's good information. If you just have to use a 55 grain bullet, go with the Sierra GK or a Barnes. Don't use a VMax or Ballistic Tip. They aren't stout enough unless you are shooting little hogs or shooting hogs up close and personal.

70gr Barnes TTSX = DRT Lazer beams. Do clean, then shoot a few rounds to season your barrel so the TTSX gets to like it. They tend to send the first few flying, then settle down after a few shots.

Has anyone been to the Gun Store in Plano ? It's close to me and the web site pictures show some shelves full of powder at least.

Cabelas in Allen gets a bunch of the Sierra Gamekings and Partitions. They go quick. They have had CFE223 and most of the Reloader powder lately.

I been using the 70 grain barnes over Reloader 15 as well and I am very happy with it. Shoots tight and drops hogs in their tracks.

Shot placement. You've ben killing hogs with a .22 LR and bird shot? You must be getting up close and personal with the critters.

Shot placement. You've ben killing hogs with a .22 LR and bird shot? You must be getting up close and personal with the critters. Shotgun kill was about 12 yds while squirrel hunting. Watched 2 shot columns bounce off the rib cage. Closest .22 shot was brain pan about 20 yds out w auto pistol on a sow. Next 18 rounds took 5 running piglets w rib shots as about 15 were high tailing it across a well site. ML was inside 30 yds off hand. 100 gr FFg and a .50 Maxiball behind the left ear.

This is from the Barnes manual, I'd say that it will work just fine for your 1:9 barrel:
Bullet Weight: 62 gr Case Trim Length: 1.750" Bullet Style: TSX BT Primer: WSR B.C. 0.287 COAL: 2 250" Barrel Length: 24"
Case: Winchester Twist Rate: 1:12"
TAC: 22.5 grains Min 24.5 grains Max
Varget: 23.5 grains Min 25.5 grains Max
