I've been after this buck throughout bow season only to have no encounters or pictures of him after a set of trail cam pics were taken in late September.



As rifle season opener arrived this weekend I hunted Saturday with little action other than a small 9, a few does, and a dozen coons (I swear those things are like corn vacuums). After missing the morning hunt on Sunday, I checked my cameras on the way in that afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised to see he was back in the area!



Sure, he had broken a brow but this guy was still #1 on the hit list for sure!

Monday morning came and though the trail cam pics were fresh on my mind, I honestly thought it would be another uneventful hunt. I made it to the stand later than intended, and in the process missed the feeder going off. I quietly sneaked in and enjoyed a good half hour of listening to duck hunters unload on birds before I saw a thing.

Finally at 6:30 I had a group of 4 does come out to the feeder. I quickly noticed that a couple of them were acting spooky and urinating frequently. Definitely the right time to be in the woods!

Ten minutes later I heard two sharp grunts to the west. All 4 does threw their heads up in unison and sure enough there he was! He came straight in lips curled, head up and began chasing one of the does around the clearing. I shot some very quick video and he finally approached the feeder. After what seemed like an eternity (probably more like 2 minutes though) he finally gave me the perfect broadside shot. He hunched forward as soon as the rifle crackled and went all of 30 yards before piling up in sight!

He's a mainframe 9 with a split G2 on the left side and an abnormal point on the inside of the right beam. G2's are about 8-1/2" on both sides with an 18+" inside spread and great mass throughout his rack. He's definitely been fighting, as his right brow, inside abnormal point, and end of the left beam are all broken. Easily one of my best bucks to date, if not a new personal best. Great start to rifle season!
