For the last 3 seasons, I have been on a small hill country lease. It's year round, with whiteys, turkey and the occasional axis. I've pretty much had the place to myself as my 2 lease partners live further away and only occasionally make it out. Its been hunting heaven, up til recently. The owner, an elderly rancher, has given up running the leasing aspect of his property to his son, who now uses this piece of land to keep goats on.

I personally think that goats are the spawn of the devil, but, thats just me.

Okay brothers, what to do? These little devils are going to eat everything in sight and I think it is too late to put up feed pens with season already started. Plus, that is another expense I simply can't afford right now.

What is your best advice for dealing with goats and feeders? anything would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Dont use a feeder, hunt the deer on natural forage and pray they arent bothered by there new buddies.

Goats can be both good and bad... but mainly bad. I'd install feeder pens ASAP. Problem is.. a goat proof feeder pen that deer can still get into is tricky.

The only thing I know to do is fence them out. We has a Spanish billy that would rear up on his hind legs and beat on the feeder with his front legs in order to knock more corn out. One shot from my .25-06 into the rocks under him sent him on his way.

Believe me brother, the thought of me, the goats, and an M60 with about 10,000 rounds is, for some odd reason, right in the front of my mind.

Look for a new lease for next year. They compete directly with the deer.

Never heard of the next generation going to sheep/goats. I have a neighbor, lovable old square-head, that his kids have told me that they love him, but as soon as he's gone, the sheep will be gone.

Approach the landowner and lease the grazing rights also. That way you won't have that problem.

I'll loan you a few coyotes. They will take care of the problem.

You cannot win against goats.

I make 10 times more off my goats than I do off deer.

Good ranchers are a dying breed, IMO. When I see some young fellas trying to make a go of ranching, I have to support them. I hope they succeed. Sad for me, but hopefully good for them.

My kid raises them for FFA and 4H; I know their evil and devious nature. They are too dang smart for my own good. And yes, I still believe them to be spawns of the devil.

The old man I use to lease from in Utopia was all he did is those dang goats but he rotated them for us and kept them away in season. He was loaded and wasnt from doing anything but tons of goats on that 4600 acres. He did tell us once if we saw the 2 in the back we can shoot them, he said I cant catch them and the dog cant either. They were then in more danger than the deer I believe. We saw them once and tool turns shooting at them at 500 plus yards and not one of us out of 6 shots hit one.

Feeder pens are a sure thing but you can maybe try a tailgate feeder and feed down a road and hunt it that morning/evening that way the goats will not be keyed in on coming to a stationary feeder.

Goats suck. I would find another lease.
