This sight is becoming all to common in western Mills County. We are finding a fresh kill almost weekly. Most are fawns but some are grown does and even a few young bucks. We don't have hogs in this area but we see an occasional coyote during daylight hours. They can be heard most nights in several directions. This most certainly is a pack or a momma and several pups because they normally leave nothing for the buzzards. I've posted these aftermath pics before but this is taking place on open coastal bermuda fields. The deer spend their nights here presumably to get out in the open away from the predators. The initial take down and kill was less than 10 feet from the picture. hammer

How many weeks has this been going on? Do you have a large acorn or mast crop?

Must have been real hungry...some of the bones are missing; wonder if something spooked whatever it was eating the carcass?

Or maybe the bones were just part of the meal, lol

I too would be curious and itching to get a game cam out there...

These kills are taking place over a 600 hundred acre area of open fields at night. It would be hit and mostly miss gettings pics on a trailcam although I agree it would be very entertaining.

They have increased significantly in the last year stx. This area use to be full of sheep and goats as was lots of other parts of Texas but they have almost become extinct in our area. Predators, low prices, government, and labor cost are mostly to blame. Neighbors have sold out mostly to absentee owners that are strictly recreation minded landowners and predator control has taken a back seat the last twenty years. Our acorn crop is subnormal this year but late summer rains has helped the browse and grass coverage immensely this fall. Thankfully our deer herd has seen a huge increase across the entire area in recent years and losing a few to predators has been a positive in droughty times. smile

I would contact a good predator caller/trapper to have them come out and work that field at night/day. If that is coyotes then I would think he should have a field day. My guess is coyotes. You and neighbors could hire a helicopter and work the surrounding sections and kill predators also. The reason I ask about acorns is that around the Brady area a few years back there was some death loss to deer one year with a huge acorn crop, since you have been finding them for the last year I would not think it is acorns.

Hunting them from the air on neighboring properties is a thing of the past here. Yes it is very beneficial and so are trappers but they are also not allowed on most properties here anymore. bang

Send them pics of the dead kills you have found and ask them how many they have found. I am betting they are not checking like you are and unaware of the problem.

One neighbor is an oilman in Houston. One is in Energy Services out of the metromess. Another is a banker out of the Austin area. The other is owned by a large mortgage company that is being sold off in 10 acres lots. Another is a retired mercantile/hardware store owner and he is trying to sell his property. Wish you were my neighbor stx bet we could get'er done. up
