I usually use the .270 but am wondering what .223 round has the best performance on deer. Let me know what you guys use.

64 grain power points, remington 55 grain soft points or 60 nosler partitions. must be no more than 100 yards and right behind the shoulder - not much room for error. of course the good old head shot works great.

I use 55 grain Sierra BT Game Kings for my .223 if I'm shooting deer or hogs with it. I've never lost a deer using these bullets and I either shoot them through the ribs or in the neck or head.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Whats wrong with the 270? I've never had one run off using a 270 either. Like someone said, with a 223 theres no room for error. I've seen a ton of deer run a good ways with a 243 in them and it would be a lung/heart shot. I like the odds with a 270 or 30-06.

nothing is wrong with the 270. i have shot 3 deer with the 223 and none of them have ran more that 30 yards. I just wanted to know, just in case of a not so perfect shot, what the best round on the market is. my little nephew and brother also use my 223 frequently. Ive seen both of them shoot, thus arises the question.

Sorry,

But I simply do not believe this is enough gun or cartridge. Will it kill a deer? Yes it will. But I can not or could not hunt deer with this cartridge. I own one and would never use it for deer hunting. Again...can you kill a deer with it? Yes. But the room for error using this cartridge is small at best.

Would you shoot a deer with a Bow?

Sounded like the question was which was the best round for the .223, not would you shoot a deer with it.

Just remember......SHOT PLACEMENT!

68 GRAIN FEDERAL BOAT TAIL HOLLOW POINT. DEER OUT TO 100YDS AND TURKEYS TO 300YDS OUT OF A 20" 1-8 SS HEAVY BARREL. REMEMBER YOUR TWIST HAS ALOT TO DO WITH IT.

I don't rely on a lot of expansion out of a 223. It is all about shot placement and, as Clint says, "A man has got to know his limitations".

As for the enough bullet/archery debate, hard to argue that. The 223 round is going to stop more by wound/shock than by "knock down"...

I will second exotic bobs sugestion of the nosler partition. They are only offered in 60 grains, which will still shoot throu most standard twist barrels just fine. I handload mind at about 3000 fps and they do great. I have shot several deer with it, and my brothers girlfriend has as well. The last one I shot(90lbs field dressed doe), was off hand shot at about 60 yards, I hit both shoulders, broke them both and exited, deer fell DRT. I have no reservations in using within its distance limitations.

i have a .223 but would hesitate to use it on a body shot on a deer. maybe shoot it in the head, but thats about it. i have shot quite a few pigs with it so i know wht it can an cannot do.

imo, a .220 swift or a .22-250 is a much better deer gun in the .22 caliber spectrum than a .223 or a .222. that being said, i would use partition if you handload, winchester makes a 64 grain power point if you don't. be ultra pickey and limit your shots to 100 yds MAX, and aim carefully

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have killed 3 or 4 deer with my Grandsons 222. I take a neck shot and they drop immediately.

What about a full metal jacket or sub sonics .223...wouldn't they really kill the deer along with wasting meat.

FMJ is probably not a good choice, little to no expansion, no stransfer of energy and no wound channel.

if you can get barnes-x or triple shocks to shoot accurately in your rifle, use them! My previous rifles i have used here in Texas were 308,270,25-06 and the 257 weatherby mag. Do i use them anymore? Not here in Texas! My go to gun now is my favorite model 70 in 22-250! With barnes bullets in 55 grain at around 3700 f.p.s.! It's just lights them up! Nothing has walked more than 5 yards! Most just drop! You ought to see the damage it makes. the only caliber that compares is my 257 mag. Now don't respond on they might be small bodied deer, cause they are not! I hunt south Texas, including large hogs! One deer weighed 175 field dressed! Even at 250 yards! Hate to say it but those other guns are put away! So try those on you're 223 and keep the distance around 200 yards or closer and you will be satisfied.

This is the only rifle I hunt with. I have alot of different bullets I have used. I have killed about five deer with remington 55gr HP. None of them went more then 20 yards. Last year I tried hornady 75gr BTHP match. I shot a hog at 70 yards and it left a 1 inch piece of rib in the road were I shot him. He made it about 25 yards since it was a liver shot. I also have shot the nosler partition bullets and they have amazing penetration, I shot a hog quartering to me. The bullet passed through his head broke a 3inch piece of his spinal cord out and exited out the top of his shoulder. I agree with Yukon95 on the barnes bullets. I personally have not used them but I have seen them in action and you get what you pay for. Some people dont think its enough gun but they obviously have not seen what this caliber does to deer and hogs.
