My wife and I are starting the ball rolling on a new house. I am going to be able to have a trophy room added on to the existing floor plan and was wanting to see what dimensions you guys have for your trophy rooms. If you have a pic of the room so I can compare sizes that would be great also.

No pics cause I only have about 9 or 10 shoulder mounts on the wall so far but If I was building again I would do 12' walls for more room to double stack and about 50% bigger than you plan on. Im out of room when the 9 mounts get back from the taxidermy shop.

How many mounts do you have now?

Do you plans on getting any full body mounts?

The two nicest I have seen were tall. Two stories high, but all open like one, big story. Very impressive and showed off the mounts nicely. I don't know the dimensions, but being that tall, it wouldn't have to be that wide or long.

Sounds like you need a warehouse, not a room. Make it a large room with 12 foot walls, and rotate out the mounts every so often. Store the others in a nice sized shop/storage building.

I went 12 feet tall ceilings, vaults work good as well. you also want to keep in mind what type of animals you will have to mount in the future. I shot an elk in New Mexico that once was on the wall made the wall look small. Also think about other uses for the room ie TV surround sound, Bar, pool table, desk etc. For size I went with 20x30. I have around 30 mounts. The things I did not think about were wanting a moose and a caribou. I am not sure I have the room. We are moving soon and I am planning to fix some of my mistakes in the next house.

Have a friend that has in excess of 50 mounts some of which are full. When he built his house he opted to integrate them into the decor of the main living areas. Big house with tall ceilings so it's not overpowering or cluttered. Looks very, very nice. Had a professional decorator help with the whole deal.

1) 30 x 30.
2) Lowest wall height 16'.
3) Include some angle walls for interest. (Not a square)
4) Wall coverings, wood so you can hang most game mounts anywhere.
5) Select special wall color and textures so nail holes can be easily hid. Just in case you want to rearrange.
6) Special blocking inside walls (make a wall map for future reference) so you can hang the heavier mounts. Moose, Muskox, Eland, Buffalo etc...
7) Couple of ledges for Sheep, Cats...
8) Include some directional lighting
9) Fireplace
10) Few if any windows... sunlight is not your mounts best friend.

We built ours with 16 foot ceilings in main entry room. Strategic lighting. Stxranchman came up with an idea I've never considered, but probably would if I build again. Use 1/2" plywood on the walls before laying drywall. Holds those heavy antlered deer up easier.

We are in the process of building and moving right now so I dont have any better pictures. Per Realtor I have moved some of the mounts out for a bit. Things I am planning and building into the new house are as follows. Large brick fireplace and additional supports in the walls for hanging heavy animals. several places I am putting in either builtins or recessed areas for cats etc.

The giraffe is my favorite mount without question. I have given thought to getting another one just because it is so amazing.

I have a friend who built his trophy room 2750 sq.ft. with 24' tall ceiling. He has a mountain in one corner with his sheep/ibex lifesize mounts then the rest of his mounts around the room. Has a shoulder mount elephant on one wall.

I have seen pictures of that room an it is incredible. I wish something like that would be an option but unless the wife wants to take a few extra jobs I don't see that happening.

Our trophy room is split up between rooms. The first room with the piano is 20'x18' and the billiard room is 24'x22' with 12' ceilings in both rooms. Our biggest issue is that we have too many windows and don't allow room for a ton of trophies, but I do enjoy the extra light.

I have built a few trophy rooms. Use 3/4 not 1/2 inch. I have seen a cape buffalo pull out of 1/2 inch. Never had anything pull out of 3/4. Only thing that needs dedicated blocking would be an elephant. Blocking limits you to those areas only. Plywood lets you hang pretty much anywhere.
