I have eaten plenty of deer and hog meat over the years and I think that hog meat is probably tastier than any deer I have had. Now I understand the feeling of seeing a big buck walk up and it's no comparison to seeing hogs but ultimately, for me, it's about getting meat in the freezer. So, why do so many people view hogs as trash or a nuisance? I see them as a tasty treat. Also, I DO NOT agree with letting them lay, what a waste.
Any opinions on this?

Venison > Pork
Except bacon.
Bacon > everything

You can only eat so many hogs. Once the freezer is full, it's full

Also, big hogs aren't as good to eat. I like to eat them up to about 80 lbs. past that, it's a case by case basis.

I'll give them away, keep them for myself, or shoot them and let the buzzards feast. For me it's about killing them for population control.

We hunted one ranch where the coyotes would clean up a 200 lb pig overnight. Each pig I gave them was one less fawn they had to catch and the pigs were a lot easier to kill than the coyotes were

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Depends on how you cook them, but ultimately venison tastes better in my opinion IMO..

I'll choose deer over hog any day.

There is no comparison between venison and pork when you look at which meat is healthier for you. Venison hands down. I like the taste of pork and eat it when I'm being offered some really good ribs and who doesn't like bacon. When you get to the point in life where you have to try to manage your cholesterol intake then venison becomes much more attractive to eat.

Hogs must be shot whenever the occasion arises regardless of whether you plan to eat them or leave them for the animals to eat. They reproduce much more rapidly than deer and other wildlife and are a constant threat to native plants and crops.

I always figured 50/50 deer and hog was the perfect breakfast sausage! Best of both worlds.

Many people hate hogs because of their destructiveness, like on farms, ranches, hayfields and such. They eat good but how many can you really keep and clean or give away. My experience has been most people say yea, bring me a hog, i would love one. Then when it comes time and you have one in the trap noone wants it, and if they do they want it cleaned and in the cooler. My uncle farms and had one block of 1000 acres of corn. It was a wet year so the hogs ventured away from the river, to his fields, and rooted many acres of seed up right after he planted. Then, later they destroyed many more acres by knocking the stalks down and eatin the corn. He had a guy trapping out there that year and he caught 200 something hogs out there, and they were still tearing it up.

I love both. They are just different. I've had the meat from a big boar and the meat from an old rutting mule deer. Both were barely fit for human consumption but made good sausage. A young spike or young sow though, hard to choose which one.

For me, it's because they can turn a 100 acre wheat field into a 50 acre wheat field overnight, literally. They then destroy the remaining 50 acres at their leisure. And yes, I leave them laying 99% of the time.

There are some really good points made here. If there was a farmer near me that had a bad hog problem then I would be more than willing to help out. If we could both benefit and I got to hunt hogs for free then I wouldn't never step foot on a deer lease (that I had to pay for) again. Now I can see where 200 hogs could be overwhelming but I would try. Also, I'm not sure but I remember reading somewhere that there is a new program where you can turn your pigs in to the county or donate them.

Deer over hogs any day. Not that I don't enjoy eating pig, just doesn't compare to deer IMO.

With that said, deer from different regions taste different depending on their diet. I have had deer that I had just assume give away.

The guy trapping for my uncle was loading them and selling them live. It doesnt pay alot, but if you have 10 or 15 traps you can do some good. It helped the guy i mentioned cause he was retired, lived close to the field, and because his neighbor was a wild hog buyer station at the time, so he was right there. With the way people are these days, its hard to find a farmer that will allow strangers to hunt their fields, IMO. If you are looking for a deal like that the best way to get to know some farmers is to hit them up and see if they need some part time help, which many do come harvest season.

I like them both. I would be sad if I couldn't shoot hogs. Very, very sad.

For eating, I am split down the middle- Love my pork, but also Love deer.
Like to hog hunt because they are more plentiful. Because I live so far away from a place to hog hunt, I make the best of whatever I can do at the time. I can deer hunt here in Missouri (very short seasons though), but hogs I have to travel. Right now I have ZERO pork in the freezer and a fair amount of deer (burger, roasts, ground for jerky, and summer sausage). Generally only go after the <100 pounder hogs to eat. Will shoot a large hog as a target of opportunity, but prefer the smaller to eat.

If you are near SE Texas, I would be more than willing to pick them up for you. I would do the dirty work too. Actually you could be just about anywhere with the exception of far west Texas and I know someone that would pick it up.

There's a guy posting in the Deer Hunting section that seems to have a hog problem. He's a lot closer to you than I am.

You can't really compare the two. I dearly love a thick cut pork chop when its cooked right, and sometimes, nothing else will do. Then, other days, back strap from a big fat doe on the grill, or battered and deep fried is the ticket. It's like asking whats better, crab or shrimp.........yeah to both, depends on the mood!

Venison actually has more cholesterol than pork per serving. The saturated fat is what is the advantage to venison. I don't know how that fairs when talking feral hog, though.

Venison = healthy meat, and I've felt some remorse for ever deer I've shot.

Feral Hog = I hope to be their version of smallpox, and stack em up like cord wood. I'll feed more buzzards and coyotes than I will myself.

Now if Hunters for the Hungry didn't charge, I'd load every one of them up.

Have you only just tried whitetail? Some of the exotic deer out there will taste way better than any whitetail or hog. Still I will pick a 8 year old whitetail buck over a 100 lb sow any day of the week.

I was given 3 60-70 lb pigs from a good friend. They were trapped and her husband fed the pigs out for a month on straight corn. I have had the chops and the spicy breakfast sausage is as good as I have ever eaten. Had some both days this weekend for breakfast.
