I had them popping up all over while dove hunting both yesterday and today. They were spread out too not just in one spot. I was amazed.

Shoot me a PM if you want to put a bird dog on those quail, or stop by the Katy NSTRA trial in October if you want a mess of quail.

Double 6, you might want to post this in the Migratory section...with it being opening Weekend and the start to the season, there has been a lot of traffic over there.

Flushed 2 cubbys on 200 acres in Fisher county this weekend. One had 17 birds the other had 9. Most birds I've seen on that property since 05.

Heard a covey in Bell Co. in opposite field from me...it was music to my ears! It was public land and no one else around, so hopefully they won't be hunted. I would like to see them come back!

Two quail came into the tank in Montague county while dove hunting. We have a few resident coveys on the place we see and scare up often.

Hunted again in Montague and scared a covey of 12 full size quail looking for a bird. They were in the dove weed.

Plenty of quail out at our place, but I can't remember a year we didn't have them. Did see two covey's of blue's. Haven't seen them around in years. Should be a good year up

I hunted opening weekend near Floydada. Last year was decent for quail and terrible for pheasants. We were mostly hunting water for the doves, but I did make a round through our usual quail and pheasant fields. The CRP is a bit better than the last 2 years, but still on the short side. There is a lot more grain crops than usual, mostly sunflowers that are already cut and milo with some corn that's still a ways off. Did not see a single quail or pheasant, although the landowner said he's been seeing some of both.

Not a good picture but saw one crossing the gravel road.

Lucy busted a large covey. Looked to be 25-30 birds.
I can't blame the dog, she has never scented a covey that large before.

Did not hunt, but was mowing senderos last week for those that did. Have been seeing quail in more places on the ranch than I have ever seen.

Saw a few big coveys on the rio in hudspeth, fort stockton area. Buddy of mine thought it would be funny to drive over some amateur dove hunters, fortunately i talked him out of it. those poor boys would have opened up with everything they had.

I am seeing lots of pairs, and one covey of about a dozen where I dove hunt. Too bad I'm not seeing the dove.

I've never been around quail but I think I saw my first covey the other day. Are there any other birds that would let you get right on top of them, then exploded into the air and stay about 20 feet off the ground?

I have seen more quail this year then I ever have. It is awesome to see them again. Dont think that I will ever hunt them again in my area, I'd feel bad as I havent seen ANY in 6 or 7 years.

Saw a covey of 10-12 birds last weekend. That is the only covey I have seen in the past five years.

Obviously the upland forum isn't as forgiving as the others. I've hunted everything else texas has to offer my entire life but know nothing about quail or other non-game birds that might act similar. Just trying to learn more

Now even more interesting that in all that hunting you never saw a quail? I don't know a deer hunter who hasn't moved a covey. But welcome to the forum, you'll learn a lot about quail here..

Thick skinned only wish I woulda been jokin. West of San Angelo, saw a pair of bobwhites, then the covey I think was blues. Another guy here said it's looking to be the best year in many

The last good year I can remember was 1996, I believe, followed by 1991. I was in Mexico several years ago, about twenty miles south of Acuna. Never in my life had I seen as many quail as was down there.

I know a lot of deer hunters here in East Texas who've never seen a covey. I suspect most of them under 30 have not.

Well you got me there, I was thinking more west Texas. I know that I hear them every year when I fish on fork in the spring, but there's a lot of land over east with no birds. I'll be more specific from here on out grin

Yes sir I do, least I think he's nice. He'll be running with the big boys in shooting dog this season so looking for him to mature and get some lessons from some real good dogs.

Went to South dove opener last weekend and saw several large covey's (20 + birds) while hunting in Frio county near Dilley.
Haven't seen many at all in Baylor county on my Deer lease.

yes Chuck it's me. Thank you!! We had a good yr with Joe, he should be with Virgil but dad wants him close. He and my derby are up in the panhandle with Adrian Jackson. They will be coming back for the first walking trial the second wk of Oct. I hope my derby can repeat what we did this past season. She has the wheels and noise. She is half sister to Joe and by Natl Ch Shadow Oak Bo.

I have been seeing several coveys on our place in Collingsworth county and really haven't been on much of the place. I'm pretty encouraged they we may have enough birds to at least get the dog some good work. Hopefully they don't disappear between now and season opening. Coveys have only been 12 or so birds, but definitely seeing more than I've seen in several years.

I've seen covies crossing road almost everytime I hunt in waller. I hear them while I'm out hunting. Havent shot a quail in about 10 years. Been buying them at cajun meat market.

Some of my best hunts have been just south of the Waller area. I was on and off the Frances Truchard lease for several years. One of his pastures was in the Winchester area. It was a really good pasture.

I have lived 20 miles north of Waller for 8 years now and haven't seen any quail in that area. I did see a bobwhite cross a road just south of Fieldstore once though. Someone suggested that it was probably a released bird.

8 years ago til last year seeing a quail was rare in the area. They have been making a come back the past 3 years. I lived in Waller from '96-2010 and had some really good quail hunts out there. But around 2000 or 2001 they were gone

My dad has a covey on his land in Wichita Falls for the first time in 7 years. They showed up earlier this year. I saw a bunch in Wolfe City while I was looking for arrowheads. Had all my attention on the ground, scanning for flint, and they blew up about 6 feet to my right and scared the shizz out of me.

Have there ever been any turkey in Waller County?

Quail and pheasant have been pretty thick in the panhandle.

While dove hunting near Palacios I think I jumped a covey of 3. Pretty new to TX hunting so I am not completely sure they were quail.

Welcome to the forum. I hunted quail down that way.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill
