The Appeal sucks so far. Having a hard time wanting to finish it. There are too many good books to be read to spend time on the books that one doesn't care for. So the reason I was thinking this book was terrible is I kept reading stuff that I swear I had read in some of Grisham's other books so I was thinking that he was running out of material or something. Finally, after about 100 pages I was like surely he didn't blatantly copy this much detail so I started flipping through the book and realized the reason I was remembering so much was because I had read the book before! haha. Felt pretty dumb, but turns out is actually an ok book with a heart breaking ending. Moving on to Robinson Crusoe.

There was an author Eugene Rhodes that died in 1934 that grew up in New Mexico, and started writing about cowboying and life in general in early New Mexico. He had a lot of his short stories published in some early magazines, wrote a few books etc.. The Weekly Reader series even published some of his books. Easy reading with a lot of connections to he history of New Mexico and western Texas.
I found the first of his books at a junk shop in here in Abilene, I had never heard of him, but I bought it anyway. Read one, then found a couple of more now I have enough to keep me busy for a while.

Nice.
Hey DC, have you been over to the White Sands National Monument before? We are planning a camping road trip in July and the tentative itinerary is to first head to the Guadalupe Mountains NP and camp for a few days and make a day trip up to Carlsbad Caverns, then drive up and make camp for a few days in the Lincoln National Forest and make a day trip over to White Sands. After that we aren't really sure where to go. Maybe up to Colorado but that is a long drive from there.
Anyways, if you have been to any of those places what did you think? If they suck then we will change it up and maybe head up to the Panhandle first to Palo Duro Canyon and then on to somewhere in Colorado...
EDIT: gonna make a thread about this

Try 'Flatland'. A short classic and entertaining read. It will feel very familiar to you in these times.

For years, I've been wanting to take on Don Delillo, but I never could summon the guts.
So, finally, I've started White Noise.

"Empire of the Summer Moon". About the Comanches. SO far a great read. I read that a year or so ago. Excellent read.

I just finished "Jump into the Shadow of the Valley" last night; my wife was at the 82nd museum this past week and thought I'd like it so got it for me as a gift. It was an excellent read. It's about a 82nd/508th trooper going through jump school and then his experience in Europe. Of the 140 men he originally jumped with on D-Day, he was the only one who wasn't wounded or killed by the end of the war.
When you look at it in that context, it's almost unimaginable compared to our casualties in modern campaigns.

For you Cormac McCarthy fans, recently read new to me author D.B. Jackson.
UNBROKE HORSES and THEY RODE GOOD HORSES
Both in very violent late 19th century western setting. If that's your thing I highly recommend them.
Just finished They Rode Good Horses. Very good book. Thanks for the recommendation!

Finished Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life" last night. I came away with the realization that I need to quit worrying about grammar and sentence structure and get busy recording as many things as I can remember about the family ranch for my grandchildren.

Currently reading Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Revisited. Just finished Happy, Happy, Happy and was pleasantly surprised. It was very good. Also recently read Proof of Heaven which was good also. Favorites ever though are Fearless ( best I've ever read) and American Sniper. Anyone started American Gun by Chris Kyle?

I just finished American Sniper. The information was interesting, but the language was so bad I almost put it down. I would be interested to know how American Gun is.

I've been on a David Baldacci kick lately. Read several of his old and new stuff.
Currently reading "Calico Joe" by Grisham and "Entreleadership" by Dave Ramsey.
I try to read one business/nonfiction/self-improvement type book a month. Hopefully going into business for myself in the next few years so trying to learn from folks that have won in business.
