I have hunted in South Texas my entire life, and I've always used my 7mm 08 with a bull barrel and 20x scope. It has been great. I've got an array of rifles that are quite aged...
I'm looking for a high-end brand of rifle, and a larger caliber. Any recommendations other than .270 & 7mm mag?

Since no boundaries are mentioned, and I have been hankering for something that would mist a coyote at a very long range, I would kindly inflict my current I want one upon you ... Noreen ULR Rifle Never send a boy... unless you want to eat the target, that is.

Cooper is the way to go if you are not looking at having a custom built. Expect to pay $1700-2500 for a new one. The used ones are not much cheaper.

I haven't looked at a new production Dakota in quite a while, but the ones I handled some years back were VERY impressive. Not just a rifle, but a work of art. If I was shopping for a higher-end gun in this day and time, I'd want to see what they're making lately.
More recently, the Nosler customs are highly thought of. I've never handled one but I know them by reputation.

High end? The two that come to mind are the Weatherby Mark 5, and (much less expensive) the Sako 85. The Weatherby Mark V The Sako 85

I love the Weatherby Mark V Deluxe or Lazermark. I shoot the .257 weatherby Mag and have dropped the traditonal whitetails and large Axis and Fallow (both over 200lbs). I have a friend of mine who has hunted just about anything with four legs and he shoots the .257. I guess the other right you could choose if you wanna go high end find a custom gun maker. They can make you some sweet looking rifles and custom fit to your specs.

I've had a Sako, old school Tikka and a ton of rem 700s and they are all gone or sitting in the safe now that I have a Cooper. I love that gun and have another on its way. Cooper will be all I buy as far as rifles go.

Sauer or Steyr would be on my short list is I had the $ and wanted a bigger caliber. Yeah, Core-Lokt would like a Sauer 202 Hatari in .375 H&H or a Mannlicher-stocked Steyr in 9.3X62. Wish in one hand ...

X2 on the Sauer 202. My cousin who lives in Germany has one and I had the chance to take some pigs with it when I visited a few summers back. Quite an amazing rifle.
Another option could be a GA Precision.

Cooper- I've had several and have never had a rifle that shoots better. Comes with the factory target, my 30-06 had all 3 through the same hole @ 100. Made in America and just a superb fit and finish.

Noreen ULR Rifle Never send a boy... unless you want to eat the target, that is. If you're looking for something a little less "asset destruction" oriented, and more pretty wood and save the pelt/flesh, a Cooper is a fine rifle... and cheaper than a tricked out Noreen ULR. Post up what you decide to go with!

If I was gonna spend a bunch of cash on a gun I would build a custom or get a blaser.
In a caliber looking for something larger than 7-08 I would look at 300win, wsm, 300 wby, but me being weird, 350 rem mag would probably be my choice.
It's hell eatin em live

For me...Cooper, Dakota, Nosler, or Jarrett. Some type of 30 caliber would do it for me. Anything bigger than that for Texas deer is overkill. I don't want to shoot em and then go reassemble the carcass (I'm just kidding. Don't all you 'big Magnum' guys get on my case).
But which 30? I'm not a fan of belted mags, but I think that still leaves good options.
Sure wish I had your problem...

Like most of the guys I have a number of rifles and mag. calibers ect..I also cull shot ranches all over South Texas and the Hill Country for the past 20 or so yrs...I've gone to shooting a 308 for a number of reasons..One..shoots multiple loads all well, and most factory loads well. Two..Low recoil and noise and is a .30 caliber and can be loaded to 180grains and is about the most accurate caliber, and has the titles to go with that..I have a Rem 700 L/H w/a Burris XTR which shoots less than MOA, and a Sako TRG which shoots well inside of that...I used to shoot/wore out 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win/Wtrby Mag/ 338 Win Mag..all good calibers..but w/Barnes Bullets I get the same results cheaper and easier on me and my shoulder...Don

I can also tell you this that if you get a custom good rifle build in todays world, you are probably looking at around $4000 min...The factory Remington in a heavy BDL conf. is usually a very good weapon w/some trigger adjustment and barrel breakin.. If you can afford the SAKO TRG which comes in 260, 308, 300Win, and 338 Lapua..it has all the bells and whistles and more than most custom weapons and will outshoot allmost every shooters ability, but it is pricey...I fired 6 shots this yr. and took 4 whitetails and two Axis..DRT. Almost not fun..Don

Cooper gets my vote. Have one and love it. There are others of course but something about a good looking classic rifle that shoots so well is hard to beat. Nosler would also be on the short list.
