Good luck on your quest. Cheap and helicopter don't generally go hand-in-hand, but I'd love to be able to afford a heli-hunt some day. The last I heard, the going rate was around $600/hr.

Cheap helicopter hunt = high potential for expensive crash and hospital.

Depends on the type of helicopter you want to hunt with. Schwiezer makes a small helicopter called the 300 cbi, they are commonly used for flight instruction. You could rent for one about $200 to $300 per hour then hire a pilot for $50 to $100 per hour. They are rated to fly without doors and that could be the cheapest possible way to do it. Cheap doesnt mean your going to have a higher chance to crash, if your hire a pilot that means he/she has a commercial pilots license and the FAA makes sure those people know what they are doing. Doing something cool from a helicopter like hunting is a change of pace from how pilots normally fly, and they would most likely jump on the oppourtunity and doing pretty cheap.

If you're lucky...most that crash at that speed and altitude end up as crispy critters. There is no training that trains a pilot to handle engine failures at 50 to 100'. That is what is referred to as the "dead man" zone. Cheap means less than acceptable maintenance standards and an inexperienced pilot....recipe for disaster.

Inexperienced pilot yes probably, but less than acceptable maintenance practices? Any aircraft used for hire is subject to 100 hour inspections as well as annuals, acceptable maintenenace practices are standardized by the FAA. No matter how cheap you rent an aircraft for its going to as safe as an expensive one.

You'll probably just have to save up and wait until you can afford it.

As I understand it there are only 2 kinds of chopper pilots in the world. Those that flew in Vietnam, and everyone else.

I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

The FAA has standards on maintenance....but you're assuming that everyone adheres to those standards. Even large air carriers are fined frequently for not adhering to them. So a owner of a "cheap" flying service will more than likely not keep maintenance at an acceptable level. As far as pilots go....the person who takes you up to 100' then hovers you around to take shots is a lunatic with less than 200hrs and will probably not live past 20. You won't find an experienced pilot doing that...they are trained to pass through that altitude very quickly with some airspeed.

Ill give you the pilot stuff but i wouldnt assume a GA guy is going to be more likely to have bad maintenance practices than airlines or any one else. As long as ive worked in the industry ive been able to see both sides of the fence and im not saying either one is going to have better maintenance practices than the other. Although i will say i feel far safer on joe smoes airplane than on any airline.

Yes and the TV show "Air Crash Investigations" highlighted several such incidents.

Problem now is hogs that get away, are smarter and stay in the thick brush and don't run. $500.00hr to hover and wait not sure who's smarter hogs or hunters? smile

You can always see former military pilots vs civilian pilots. Mil guys/gals know - get airborn fast, get off the ground or you are a buzzard bait. In the air you feel a bit more comfortable with them too, though it could be tingling sensation when they decide to get cute and show some tricks.

I wanna get a cheaper that regular heli-hog flight too.

I would one like too!!! smile Night flight over field with lots of hogs rice, wheat, corn. They could all be exterminated! But I wouldn't be paying for it. The farmer or rancher will have to foot the bill before I commit my a$$ and 100'$ worth of ammo to flying at night and hanging out the porkchopper. Would want military vet pilot at the sticks.
