I found a landowner in Illinois that is willing to lease me his farm for hunting for the entire season for $500. Just wanted to see if anyone else has hunted up there and what should I expect? I plan to do a late October or early November bow hunt and maybe one more trip later in the season. He has corn and soy bean fields with quite a bit of river bottom timber. A friend of mine live in Illinois and he went and looked at the place early this week and said it is a honey hole. He sent me pictures of sheds that he found that looked like 180ish class deer. I'm pretty excited about it but don't have a clue what to expect when I get there. Any info would be appreciated.

Sounds like a great deal. Anyone else hunting the property? I would get me an aerial view of the property to start with to see how the farmland, timberland and river bottom lay. Then start from there once I got on the place.

What would really help your success is if you could make a trip up and scout this summer. To find old sign and find the pinch points ahead of time. Maybe even hang a stand or two to get ahead of them game and cut some shooting lanes now. Any idea how much of the land will get flooded if the river is up and flooding? Might effect your hunting a bunch if it happens.

That is the stuff that people who don't hunt will never understand. It ain't always about the kill.

See if he will leave just a little of his crops standing. Or even offer to buy an acre or so to leave unharvested that you can leave standing.

I suggest if your buddy lives close by you ship him some of your trail cams and beg he put them up for you to help narrow down your options a little bit before you get there to scout. you can give him general ideas by using google earth, but best method is eyes on the funnels, draws and spurs that lead down into the corn/soybeans. also try to pinpoint on google earth where you think the bedding area may be so that when you get there you don't accidentally go trapsing through it messing up the deer's travel patterns. GOOD LUCK to you my friend, you won the lottery!!

Then start from there once I got on the place. He has family that hunts the first gun season but nobody else will be there for archery. I have a plat of the property that the landowner sent me but it's not like an aerial.

Get on google earth and you can print your own smaller maps off the internet. You can also mark the perimeter and likely blind spots also on it. Sounds like a really great place.

Thanks, I'll have to get on there this weekend and see if I can figure out how to look at it all on Google Earth. I have never really used it much. I'm pretty excited about the trip. I lost my lease this season due to the landowner selling some of the property so this came at a perfect time for me. The landowner said that his only rule is that when we go hunt we shoot at least one doe each. I'm not really driving that far to shoot does but if that's what it takes then I will. Maybe I can kill a new world record the first morning and then I can shoot does the rest of the week for him.

Don't forget to apply early for your nonresident license for archery and early gun season if you plan to hunt it. They don't allow rifle in Illinois so find a slug gun and practice. Good luck with that as they kick like a mule and you don't have the range of a rifle. I hunted Illinois a couple of years ago and passed on a big bodied buck that didn't have the size horns I was looking for and ended up with nothing. On opening day of gun season it sounded like a war going on in the adjoining properties as it sounded like the deer were running a gauntlet. Saw a couple of 150-165 deer shot that weighed 250+.
Good luck!

I do not think it will let you save it or print it though. But I find it usefull to find and look aerially at property. http://www.acme.com/planimeter/
