Trying to count the animals on my dads land and I ran across this one. I say its a whitetail, but my buddy says it a mule. What do you think?

And what besides antlers helps identify individual deer? Yeah I know it a whitetail, I was just wondering if it was the same buck in both pics.

Any physical feature on the body or head can help you tell them from year to year without antlers. Overall body coat or face color. Location of and amount of throat patches. Tail color or length. Scars on the body.

Cool, thanks. It will probably take sometime to get good at identifying them. I'm looking at pics of a mule deer doe. I have pics of it on 6 different days and don't know if its the same one or different. I'm just trying to find out how many deer we have that way we know what we can take next year.

Sling shots like this? Only mule buck I've seen so far. Before I found out it was a mule, I couldn't understand why this 4 pointer was way bigger then the mature 10 pointer we have running around. Then someone pointed out that its a mule. The size difference is amazing. Can't wait till he matures, or his dad comes along. I hear mature mule bucks don't hit feeders is this true?

Mature muledeer buck do hit the feeders. Some muledeer grow antlers that look like a white tail..... you have to go by the tail

Obviously look at the tail, tarsal glands are hard to see. Mulies have much larger ears (hence the name) but they look almost blue-grey compared to WT which look brown or reddish in color. Yes they will come to a feeder.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

Good info, thanks. I never keyed in on the color difference. Do the muledeer bucks ears always droop? I know the does are always at attention, scanning. They are very cautious.
