My 16 year old son out of no were wanted to go hunting, so we got a late start on the season. The weekend after thanksgiving we went down to my dads land, and set up a feeder and a camera. We saw one 6 point buck but that's all. We only sat in the blind for 3hrs. So I can't wait to see what the cameras captured. I'm 36 and this will be my first time hunting. So I'm a old noob. Got my licence today and will be heading out at 7 in the morning on our 5 hr drive.

Anyone know how the hunting is west of comstock? Is the rut on or is it over?

Out in Dryden, still a good ways from Comstock the rut is just beginning. I think you timed it pretty good but it's gonna be a little warm so the bucks won't be quite as perky. Good luck!

Thanks for the info grout.

Landpirate, I know I was mad at myself....

I didn't see anything but javlinas. But I did get some pics of nice buck on my trail cam. It was nice to see good size bucks on the land. I had no clue what was out there. It's my dads land and no one hunts on it. Good to spend time with the family, especially since it almost a 5 hr drive each way....

Heading back out in the morning, anybody know what the rut situation is like out there? Also when the general season is over out there? It's a split county, and is kinda confusing. The land is on the other side of comstock south of 90. I think my season ends sunday, but my son is good for another two weeks. Here are some pics of a couple of bucks that we caught on camera. I hope we can bag one.

Yep, since nobody answered your question. Over Sunday, think the next week is for kiddos and of course 2 more for doe & spike. Check the TPWD regs though.

Thanks, sandman and pichin. Green light on him.
My son still has one last shot next week.

Fbchunter, ok good to know. My son had this doe lined up, but I told him not to pull the trigger. Her ears were big and she had a black tail. I'm a new to hunting,so I'm glad we made the right call, and didn't get all caught up in our first kill.

And this is a mule deer for sure right. A better picture of his rack. I was wondering why he was so much bigger then that 10 pointer.

mule deer have a thinish black tail.

where are you hunting, out by comstock or closer to dryden?

yes, like the one above. be darn shure of what your shooting, it will cost you a ticket if the GW finds out.

I haven't seen too many mulies north of 90, mostly south

Yeah we were out there for mule season but didn't see any of course.

Good lesson for the boy, when in doubt don't shoot.

If your property is near Pumpville, you really have to make a positive ID on the deer. There are some whitetails with mule deer traits. I hunted there for 5 years and was amazed by what I saw there. We were told by the game warden that was the case in that area where there habitats meet.
