I have no idea how the hunting is. I drove through RR county the day after Christmas and the wheat fields were loaded with deer. I saw one deer in particular about 300 yards off the road in a bottom, it was physically the largest deer I have ever seen.

I just looked up the limits on that county, and I was shocked. 2 buck 2 doe and no AR's. I fished at a club lake in RRC that was stocked with Florida's for years. It was outside of Anona in the middle of nowhere, and while I was fishing there I saw what probably averaged out to be one deer per year. That lake must not have been a popular spot.

So here's the deal,a friend of mine is looking at 4200 aacres in red river county, and asked me if he turn in to a hunting club if I would run it for him.I just don't anything about deer hunting in that county, but if it works out. I will be looking for 30 hunters and it will be less than a thousand dollars a person or I won't run it.

I hunted north of Clarksville on a co-workers 40 acre lease. Too many hogs as I can remember. Poaching was a problem. I ran off a local who actually built a stand on my friend's land and had the nerve to say he had permission to hunt there. There were deer on property but not high quality.

Red River County is diverse, even the north and south edges with rivers are different areas. The middle and western parts have few deer. Along the rivers and eastern bottomlands there are deer, but numbers seem to be declining with the increased bag limits from the onset of AR's. There are really two distinct sets of deer/regions/soil even in that one county.

This is very true, pure flat blackland prairie in some areas and sandy Postoak woods in the eastern parts.North of Paris near the Red, no postoaks, all whiteoak.Populations can vary greatly from area to area.

The declining varies place to place. As on our place the numbers are up big time. We are gonna do MLD next year to help with the doe numbers. 40-50 deer in the fields and only a couple would be bucks. And talking to our neighbors they had the same problem. But then again we are bordered by big ranches as well that dont hunt so that helps the numbers.

Where are you in the county?
I've hunted both ends, and have friends still hutning there.... Only places with growing numbers have been north that I know of, but I am glad they are growing some places!

On the properties I have dealings with the numbers are down. They are not near what there were before AR's and pigs. In the 80's we had deer out the butt in SE Red River Cty.

Deer Whisperer,

I have hunt my land in northern Red River County and I can tell you that the poaching and trespassing is horrible. I had two big issues just this past season, both times dealing with trespassers. I see more does than bucks but you know they're out there. During the second half of the season I noticed a lot of night feeding due to the high number of full moon nights; and that's hard to counter. I didn't think Clarksville had 4200 acres but I could be wrong. I'm assuming you're referring to north Hwy 37 toward the Red River?

Yes north of 37 but what everybody is saying I'm thinking of backing out deal. The guy wanted me to put 30 hunters on it and run it,but I'm thinking now I better stay in San Augstine county at least I'm starting to bond with the trespassers down there.

I hunt in south rr county in the fullbright area. 8 bucks taken this season and all were nice size bucks. Smallest had a 15" spread. Poaching is a problem though....

Yes this is a huge problem in this county. We are taking steps to help and havent had any serious issues other then some hog doggers. We are on the river and that doesnt help either.

I know a guy that has property along the Sulphur river and another that has about 300 acres 5 miles north of Clarksville. Both have decent deer populations. They both normally get deer but other than peak rut I have not seen much when hunting up there. I would guess that it is a lot like the rest of East Texas in that the hunting would be a lot better if not for the local meat hunters. Like Sig said lots of open land in the middle of the county. Another guy I use to work with had a big lease on the Red River and it was good but hard to get in to.

A lot of great deer and turkey hunting in the North part of the county but you almost need to have someone living on your property to keep an eye on things.
