Just letting Jay's friends here know that he had another great hunt.

Friday evening was a little cool, but the deer were moving and Jay was excited to once again be out in the field. We saw a really huge 8 point buck deer2 but he wouldn't stop anywhere Jay could get a shot at him. He finally stopped out at 80 yards and Jay got the crosshairs on him. Right as Jay was about to let him have it, a spike walked directly broadside to the buck and blocked the shot. The buck then walked into the brush. Talk about a heart breaker!!!! We waited to see if anything else would come out and sure enough, a nice 3 year old, thick horned 6 pointer came out in the clearing. One shot and Jay has a DRT (dead right there) buck to put in the freezer.

Saturday morning welcomed us to ice on the windshield, 28 degrees and a brisk North wind blowing in our faces. eeks333 We had all 3 heaters in Jay's blind cranked up. smile We had several deer around us all morning and at 8:20, that super 8 pointer come in. He's really tall horned and 17" wide. His G2's are right at 12' tall and his G3's are about 10" tall. Just a beautiful buck with long beams that sweep around to almost meet and then turn up in a beautiful curve. Does anyone know what buck fever is? smile smile smile Well, a shot over the top of his shoulder let him know that he needed to get in the brush again. smile bang

Saturday evening was pretty uneventful, as no good buck would show their face. We had a spike that we called "silver dollar" that was on the hit list. He only had knobs for horns that were almost the size of a silver dollar and was 1 1/2 years old. Well, ol' Jay put those crosshairs on him and we now have two deer for the freezer. Another DRT!

Jay's brother-in-law, Donnie, has brought Jay to the ranch for the past 8 years and his only horns that he's ever gotten in his life were those from a big cull spike we had a couple of years ago. The ranch is heavily game managed and we're only allowed to take one buck a year. Every other year, two of the hunters on the ranch, in rotation, are allowed to take two buck. This is the year my wife and I are allowed two buck. So, we decided it was time for Donnie to get a buck of his dreams, by giving up one of our bucks. We gave him the green light to take a mature buck of his choice. We placed him in a tower stand that overlooks a nice canyon. He had a nice 8 pointer come and go Friday and Saturday, but he couldn't ever get a clean shot at him. That buck didn't want to stay out in the open for more than a minute or two anytime he came out. Sunday morning was a heavy mist that turned into a nasty light rain. Jay and I heard a solid "thud" shot come from the direction Donnie was hunting. Seems another really nice 8 pointer came in and gave Donnie a clean, 120 yard shot. So, Donnie was able to take the second buck of his life, a trophy for sure for him.

One of the great things about the hunt was a bobcat that kept coming out by the cabin and carrying off meat scraps. He wasn't more than 12 yards from the window in the cabin. We saw him come and get scraps a half dozen times over a couple of days. He even tried to carry off one of the heads, but it was too heavy for him.

Jay and Donnie,,,,, once again, Barbie and I really enjoyed spending time with you guys. I don't know how to thank you enough for that wonderful Yeti ice chest you gave to us. We will definitely put it to great use.

I especially want to thank my wonderful wife, Barbie, for working her tail off by having breakfast and supper ready every day when we came in from hunting.

I really had a great time hunting with Tommy again and I'm very Thankful for having friends like Tommy and Barbie, it means a lot to me and I feel Donnie feels the same as I do.
Me missing a buck of a lifetime was not meant to be and I was just as thrilled getting the spike. I was so happy for my brother-n-law that was able to kill his first 8 point, when Tommy and I heard him shoot, we high five each other and the end of our hunt had come to a end. Now it was time to head back to the cabin and skin'em up. Tommy could go by BuckSkinner because he had 2 done within a hour! Unbelievable!

Tommy and Barbie, I'm very grateful for having you as my friends and hopefully we will be able to get together again. Thank you once again Tommy and Barbie!

Great job Jay and Donnie. I try to keep up with the success on your hunts. My family and I have been blessed to hunt 7 years on the ranch. If you go to the "bow" seccession you can see the buck I got this year with my bow under "November 2011 bow kill". Tommy and I are cousins, but due to the distance and brothers for Grandfathers, we never really knew each other until we "met" a few years ago. I knew Tommy's dad Dean and thought the world of him. Your probably thinking-----how could you not know your cousin? You can't imagine how many Haglers there are. LOL Tommy and Barbie are terrific people as you know. We are blessed to know them.

It's the time spent in God's creation with family and friends making memories that counts.
